Sussex Cricket Team has incurred a 12-point penalty in the County Championship, and their captain, Cheteshwar Pujara, will be absent from the upcoming match against Derbyshire due to an automatic suspension triggered by the club’s accumulation of four fixed penalties in the season.
Additionally, Sussex has taken disciplinary action against three players – Jack Carson, Tom Haines, and Ari Karvelas – following incidents that marred their recent victory against Leicestershire. Carson, an England Lions offspinner, faced reprimand from the umpires during the match for attempting to trip Ben Cox, expressing regret for crossing boundaries in the spirit of the game.
Opener Haines, also the One-Day Cup captain for Sussex, apologized for excessive appealing during the game. Fast bowler Karvelas remains unavailable pending an investigation into an incident during the Leicestershire match.
The victory against Leicestershire had initially positioned Sussex favorably for promotion, but the subsequent penalties have dropped them to fifth place in the table, trailing second-placed Worcestershire by 30 points with two games left in the season.
Head coach Paul Farbrace while Speaking with Live cricket scores emphasized the need to take a stand against inappropriate behaviors, noting that the penalties have unfortunately affected the availability of key players like Pujara.
He acknowledged the disappointment caused to supporters and members, reiterating the commitment to preventing such situations in the future.
Earlier in the season, Sussex had already received sanctions from umpires, with Pujara and Haines facing Level 1 offences in separate incidents during the season.
