Players and managers have shown strong support for Harry Maguire after the confirmation of distressing news this evening.

Harry Maguire, the Manchester United captain, has been a frequent target of criticism and, at times, abusive treatment from sections of the United fanbase and the broader footballing community.

This negative sentiment culminated in boos during the international break when Maguire scored an own goal in England’s victory over Scotland.

England’s manager, Gareth Southgate, publicly criticized the treatment of Maguire, who, in turn, emphasized that he does not let such abuse affect him. Maguire’s own mother even released a statement, appealing for empathy and understanding.

Erik ten Hag, who took over the captain’s role from Maguire earlier in the summer and subsequently moved him down the pecking order, has come out in strong support of the 30-year-old defender.

Ten Hag described Maguire as a “great” player and stressed that the treatment he has received is disrespectful and undeserved. The manager expressed his belief in Maguire’s abilities and called on him to focus on his performances and ignore the negative attention.

Ten Hag highlighted Maguire’s career trajectory, indicating that there is more to come from the player. He urged Maguire to block out the criticism by delivering strong performances on the field.

The manager also acknowledged the dynamics of the team and the importance of managing different personalities within the squad. While team unity is paramount, each player has a unique role and character, and it’s essential to navigate these dynamics effectively.

Maguire recently made his first appearance for Manchester United this season during a 3-1 loss to Arsenal before the international break. He came off the bench for the final 20 minutes after Lisandro Martinez suffered an injury.

It appears that Maguire is set to return to the bench for the upcoming match against Brighton & Hove Albion, as Ten Hag confirmed the fitness and availability of both Martinez and Victor Lindelof.

Raphael Varane, a regular starter for the team, remains unavailable, along with midfielder Mason Mount, and defenders Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
