Montpellier terminated Mamadou Sakho’s contract after a physical altercation between the former Liverpool center-back and manager Michel Der Zakarian.
Sakho, who joined Montpellier as a free agent in 2021, had seen a decline in his playing time throughout this season, and tensions boiled over during a practice session last week.
The 33-year-old reportedly engaged in a heated argument with Der Zakarian, even referring to him as a “cry-baby,” before walking off the field.
It’s said that during this incident, Sakho grabbed his coach by the collar, causing a necklace to shatter. Sakho himself acknowledged the termination of his contract with Montpellier through an Instagram statement.
In his statement, Sakho expressed that when respect is no longer being shown, it’s essential to know when to walk away. He made it clear that he takes no accountability for the incident that transpired at the training center last week.
He officially ended his association with Montpellier Herault Sports Club, effective as of February 11, 2023. He also mentioned that he cherished the opportunity to share his elite experience with his teammates and the young talents at the training facility during his two years with the club.
Sakho extended his gratitude to various individuals and groups, including sports director Bruno Carotti, the medical team, and the dedicated fans who supported him during his tenure at Montpellier. Notably, Der Zakarian was conspicuously absent from Sakho’s expressions of gratitude.
