Less than two years after being appointed as Ed Woodward’s successor, the 52-year-old is expected to leave his role as Chief Executive of Manchester United.
The departure is anticipated as Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS group finalizes a 25% minority investment in the club. Confirmation of Ratcliffe’s purchase is imminent, and along with the stake, he is expected to assume control of sporting operations at the club.
Richard Arnold’s tenure as United CEO has been marked by challenges, particularly facing criticism for the handling of Mason Greenwood amid legal accusations.
The player is currently on loan at Getafe. The club faced backlash when it was revealed there was an intention to reintegrate Greenwood into the United first team, only for a subsequent u-turn.
In a statement, United announced Arnold’s decision to step down after 16 years with the club. Patrick Stewart will take over as interim CEO, in addition to his existing role as General Counsel. Richard Arnold will continue to provide transitional support until the end of December. A search process will be initiated for a new permanent CEO.

Ratcliffe is expected to appoint a new chief executive and sporting director, with permanent appointments likely by December. Patrick Stewart, a United fixture since 2006, is anticipated to serve as interim CEO until a full-time appointment is confirmed.
Jean Claude Blanc, from INEOS and with past experience at Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, is a contender for the CEO role. Paul Mitchell, formerly associated with Monaco and RB Leipzig, is in contention for the sporting director position.
Long-term Ratcliffe colleague Sir Dave Brailsford is also poised to play a role in the club’s operations. The significant changes in leadership underscore a transformative phase for Manchester United as they navigate new ownership and strategic shifts in their management structure.
