Gary Neville expressed bewilderment at a perplexing decision that left Manchester City, including Erling Haaland, infuriated during their draw against Spurs.

The contentious moment involved referee Simon Hooper not halting play when Jack Grealish had a clear chance in extra time. Haaland, notably upset, joined other City players in expressing frustration over the referee’s choice.

Neville, providing commentary on Sky Sports, couldn’t comprehend Hooper’s actions, exclaiming, “Oh no! What did Simon Hooper do there? He played on to begin with.

That is a very strange one.” The confusion lingered as the final whistle blew minutes later. Haaland, directly affected by the incident, stormed off the pitch, reportedly shouting at Hooper to ‘F**k off,’ as documented on social media.

Sky Sports broadcasted a video highlighting Hooper seemingly allowing play to continue before ultimately blowing the whistle after Grealish’s opportunity, rather than addressing the foul on Haaland.

Micah Richards, expressing his confusion, stated, “I don’t get it. Up until now, the ref had a good game. He blows the whistle, stops, and waves it again. The play then stops. Which I don’t get. He should have let the game continue; Grealish has a one-on-one with the goalie.”

Roy Keane, while acknowledging Hooper’s error, emphasized that Manchester City bore the responsibility for allowing Spurs to level the game. Keane commented, “It was a bad call. Jack is through on goal.”

He pointed out that blaming the referee for City’s lapse would be , asserting, “He’s wrong about that; he’s blown the whistle for some reason. Because they let Spurs off the hook, City will be hard on themselves. Don’t blame the judge for that.”

The controversial decision by Hooper became a focal point, leading to heated reactions from players and pundits alike. The consensus was that the referee’s call had a significant impact on the outcome, but Keane stressed that City’s missed opportunities and defensive lapses were crucial factors in Spurs making a comeback.

The incident added another layer to the ongoing debates surrounding officiating decisions and their implications in high-stakes football matches.
