Manchester United has initiated substantial measures to secure the signing of Leny Yoro in the January transfer window.

Manchester United is actively pursuing the acquisition of 18-year-old Lille defender Leny Yoro in the January transfer window, aiming to find a replacement for Raphaël Varane.

The French center-back’s future at United appears uncertain as he has been relegated to fourth-choice under manager Erik ten Hag.

During United’s recent 2-1 victory over Chelsea, Varane was notably absent due to a back injury, with Jonny Evans making a return to the bench after a month-long absence caused by a hamstring injury.

Reports from French outlet Le10 Sport indicate that United is taking decisive steps to secure the signing of Leny Yoro, who has garnered attention from top clubs across Europe. Yoro, an 18-year-old talent who emerged from Lille’s youth academy in 2022, has made a significant impact by starting in 12 games this season.

Sources reveal that both Ten Hag and Manchester United have initiated contact with the young French defender, engaging in initial discussions about a potential winter transfer. However, Lille is reportedly reluctant to part ways with Yoro in the January window.

With Varane possibly departing in the summer rather than mid-season, a summer transfer for Yoro to Old Trafford seems more plausible, positioning him as a long-term replacement for the World Cup-winning defender. Yoro’s existing contract with Lille extends until 2025, and the Ligue 1 club is eager to secure an extension amid heightened interest from various clubs, including Manchester City.

Additionally, another player catching the eye of Ten Hag is Nice’s Jean Claire-Todibo, who has been assigned a hefty £45 million price tag by owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. While Varane expresses contentment at United for the time being and remains committed to fighting for his place in the squad, the possibility of recruiting fresh defensive talent indicates the club’s strategic planning for the future.

It’s worth noting that Varane, exempt from Euro 2024 following his retirement from international football, faces less immediate pressure.

The ongoing pursuit of young talents like Yoro and Todibo reflects Manchester United’s proactive approach to squad development and preparation for potential changes in the defensive lineup. As negotiations and discussions unfold, the upcoming transfer windows will likely shape the defensive dynamics at Old Trafford.
