Manchester United confirmed the departure of a key player this evening.

Manchester United’s loanee Sergio Reguilon, who arrived in the summer of 2023, is poised to make a return to Tottenham Hotspur. The Spanish left-back was initially brought in by United to address the team’s depth issues at that position, exacerbated by injuries to regular starters Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. Reguilon’s loan deal included a break clause scheduled for the midway point of the season.

Reguilon has made 12 appearances for United during the current campaign, contributing to the team’s efforts in light of the injury concerns. However, with Shaw regaining fitness and Malacia nearing a comeback, coupled with the versatility of players like Diogo Dalot and Sofyan Amrabat, United has deemed it practical for Reguilon to return to Tottenham.

Before securing the loan deal for Reguilon, Manchester United also explored the possibility of bringing in Marc Cucurella from Chelsea. However, negotiations with the Blues proved unsuccessful, leading to Cucurella’s continued stay at Stamford Bridge.

Tottenham, on the other hand, might decide to retain Reguilon for the remainder of the season. Both United and Spurs are solely competing in the Premier League and FA Cup, and Reguilon’s return to his parent club provides Tottenham with added defensive options. The break clause in the loan agreement allows for flexibility in this decision-making process.

Reguilon had a notable pre-season with Tottenham under new head coach Ange Postecoglou, but it became evident that Destiny Udogie was the preferred starting left-back for the 2023/24 campaign.

The timing of Reguilon’s return aligns with FIFA regulations, as players are only allowed to feature for two clubs in a single season. Tottenham’s upcoming fixtures include an FA Cup encounter with Burnley and a Premier League clash with Manchester United on January 14.
