Mauricio Pochettino implemented three alterations to Chelsea’s starting lineup following their triumph over Preston North End. Thiago Silva, Noni Madueke, and Conor Gallagher returned for the match at Riverside Stadium.

Cole Palmer, assigned as Chelsea’s false nine, immediately engaged in the game, receiving a pass from Madueke and taking a shot, though it was too close to Boro goalkeeper Tom Glover. Palmer’s involvement extended as he frequently dropped into his own half, enabling Madueke and Raheem Sterling to occupy central positions.

Palmer’s off-ball contributions were notable, intercepting the ball on the half-hour mark to create a scoring opportunity. However, he missed the chance, placing the ball wide. Despite Palmer’s efforts, Boro took the lead before the 40-minute mark through Hackney, capitalizing on defensive lapses.

Levi Colwill’s defensive struggles, particularly as a left-back, were evident. His positioning and challenge with Isaiah Jones allowed Boro to set up the goal. The absence of a specialized left-back, exacerbated by Ian Maatsen’s loan departure, raised questions about Chelsea’s defensive choices.

Entering halftime behind, Chelsea faced challenges, with Palmer creating chances but lacking clinical precision. In the second quarter, Madueke had an opportunity to equalize, heading a ball into the box too close to Glover.

Chelsea’s second-half strategy centered on wide crosses, but the absence of a physical presence in the box was notable. Armando Broja remained on the bench despite the need for attacking prowess.

Broja eventually entered the game, accompanied by Mykhailo Mudryk. Despite dominating possession, Chelsea failed to score, displaying wastefulness in front of goal and defensive vulnerabilities. The disorganized defending made Boro, despite their unremarkable performance, seem more threatening at times.

The second leg, commencing in two weeks, poses a significant challenge for Chelsea. Adjustments are imperative, particularly in defense and finishing.

Although time remains for amends at Stamford Bridge, the team must address defensive frailties and capitalize on scoring opportunities to secure a favorable outcome in the upcoming fixture.
