There’s a possibility that Andre Onana might not miss any of United’s matches during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
If Cameroon fails to advance beyond the group stage – where the top two teams progress – Onana could be available for United’s FA Cup fourth-round clash against Eastleigh or Newport scheduled for the weekend of January 27.
Erik ten Hag’s squad enjoys a two-week winter break following their game against Tottenham and doesn’t have any fixtures until the FA Cup fourth round. United’s next Premier League fixture is on February 1 against Wolves.
Onana, who has played every minute for United this season, starting in all 29 matches, is expected to continue in goal for the upcoming match against Spurs. The club secured an agreement with the Cameroonian FA to retain Onana until January 14, delaying his departure for international duty.
Cameroon’s AFCON journey begins with a Group C match against Guinea on January 15, less than 24 hours after United’s game against Spurs concludes. Subsequent group stage clashes with Senegal on January 19 and Gambia on January 23 complete Cameroon’s initial schedule.
In the event Cameroon progresses to the AFCON final on February 13, Onana could miss up to four United matches, including a crucial encounter against Aston Villa. Despite the Premier League’s January 1 deadline for player releases ahead of the tournament, United has the flexibility to field Onana against Spurs.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou shared his perspective on the situation, noting that each club has the autonomy to handle such matters.
He emphasized adherence to FIFA rules regarding player representation in international tournaments and expressed the desire for players’ success and well-being.
