Manchester United is reportedly facing internal unrest as some players express reluctance to have Mason Greenwood return to the squad, fearing potential disruptions to their season.
Greenwood, who recently had charges of attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behavior dropped, was initially arrested in January last year after disturbing videos and images surfaced online.
Despite the Crown Prosecution Service’s decision to drop the charges, The Sun reports that members of the United squad are apprehensive about Greenwood’s return, citing concerns about the potential distractions and scrutiny it might bring.
A source revealed, “The players are open to him returning to the team but the scrutiny could be massively distracting. The dressing room is the happiest it has been for ages, and no one wants to rock the boat.”
In response to the CPS decision, Manchester United released a statement acknowledging the dropped charges and stating that the club would conduct its own process before determining the next steps. The statement emphasized the club’s commitment to ensuring a thorough internal review.
Erik ten Hag’s side, meanwhile, has been enjoying a successful run in both the Premier League and the Carabao Cup. Currently sitting in third place in the league after a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace, United has also secured a spot in the Carabao Cup final. They are set to face Newcastle at Wembley at the end of the month.
