Erik ten Hag finally breaks silence on reason for bringing on Antony in 99th minute of Manchester United’s Fulham loss

In yesterday’s Premier League fixture at Old Trafford, Manchester United suffered a 2-1 defeat against Fulham. The match saw Calvin Bassey putting Fulham ahead in the second half, followed by Harry Maguire’s equalizer before full-time.

However, the Cottagers secured the victory deep into injury time with Alex Iwobi’s decisive goal, leaving the hosts stunned after their own pressing attempts for a winner.

Recently, Antony, who was signed for a hefty £82 million fee from Ajax in 2022, has found himself relegated to the bench under manager Ten Hag’s tenure at Old Trafford.

Instead, players like Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford have been favored on the flanks. Despite being called upon in the 99th minute against Fulham, Antony’s appearance lasted a mere 40 seconds as the final whistle blew shortly after his substitution.

Addressing the late change and Antony’s limited game time, Ten Hag provided candid reasons during the post-match interview.

He clarified that Antony’s exclusion wasn’t due to fitness concerns, as the Brazilian winger is fit but faces competition from other options, particularly on the right side where United lack depth due to injuries.

While acknowledging Antony’s potential, Ten Hag emphasized the need for him to elevate his performance and compete with players like Omari Forson, Amad Diallo, and Garnacho, who have also shown promise and deserve playing time.

Reflecting on the match, Ten Hag admitted that United struggled with Fulham’s impact, particularly on the left side, but praised the team’s ability to react and regain control of the game.

Despite showing character in both halves, Ten Hag criticized the slow starts and emphasized the importance of being ready from the onset. He highlighted that with the squad available, United should have emerged victorious.

Overall, Ten Hag’s remarks shed light on the tactical decisions and performance analysis following United’s disappointing defeat against Fulham.

The manager’s evaluation underscores the need for improvement and consistency in order to achieve better results in future matches.
