Huge news have been announced on SKY SPORTS this morning regarding Mason Greenwood’s future at Manchester United this summer

    adminBy adminApril 3, 2024No Comments2 Mins Read

Manchester United loaned out Greenwood to Getafe last summer after the charges against him were dropped, opting for him to continue his football career away from Old Trafford for the time being.

It was widely anticipated that Greenwood would make a permanent departure in the summer, but the possibility of his return to United was left open earlier this year by new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Greenwood’s contract with United is set to expire in 2025, potentially putting him in the final year of his deal this summer and making him available at a reduced price.

United can safeguard his value by exercising their extension clause, a move that Getafe reportedly believes has already been made.

Getafe officials have openly expressed their interest in retaining Greenwood beyond the current season, whether through another loan spell or a permanent transfer, and they left discussions with United under the impression that the player’s contract has been extended until 2026.

United, however, have not confirmed any decision regarding Greenwood’s contract at this stage.

They have until May 2025 to trigger their option and are not obligated to disclose their decision publicly.

Getafe’s desire to retain Greenwood has been complicated by his impressive performances on the field this season. With eight goals and five assists to his credit, the 22-year-old has attracted interest from several top clubs, including Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Financial constraints would likely prevent Getafe from competing with these clubs for a permanent transfer, even though their reported interest has not been confirmed.

As part of the loan agreement, Getafe secured a 20% share of any future transfer fee for Greenwood. United agreed to this compensation as recognition of the risk Getafe took by signing the striker, both in terms of sporting performance and the controversy surrounding his signing.

As things stand, Greenwood is set to return to United at the end of the season, prompting Ratcliffe and United’s management to make a decision about his future.
