Manchester City outcast Joao Cancelo faces uncertainty regarding his transfer situation due to Barcelona’s managerial decision following the sacking of Xavi.

Joao Cancelo, currently on loan from Manchester City, faces an uncertain future as the summer transfer season approaches, compounded by the turbulent process of selecting a new manager by his current team, Barcelona.

Cancelo’s journey has been marked by strained relationships at his parent club, Manchester City, leading to his loan spells at Bayern Munich during City’s treble-winning campaign and subsequently at Barcelona this season.

While at Barcelona under Xavi Hernandez, Cancelo has made 41 appearances and contributed to eight goals, showcasing his value on the field.

Despite his performances, Cancelo’s future remains murky. He is set to return to Manchester City at the end of the season, as his loan to Barcelona was only for one season, with no option to buy included in the agreement.

This has led to months of conflicting rumors about his next destination. Recent reports suggest that Cancelo will not be returning to Camp Nou, especially with the anticipated managerial changes at Barcelona.

Spanish newspaper SPORT reports that Xavi Hernandez will not continue as Barcelona’s manager, with Hansi Flick likely to succeed him. Flick reportedly does not favor Cancelo, questioning his defensive capabilities and preferring to explore other options in the transfer market.

Flick’s strategy appears to diverge significantly from Xavi’s, particularly in terms of player acquisition, with a noted preference for long-term signings over loans.

This potential managerial shift marks a stark departure from earlier plans. Just weeks ago, Xavi had expressed a desire to continue his role, and the board had persuaded him to stay, which ostensibly included a plan to secure a second loan for Cancelo.

However, with Flick’s expected arrival, this continuity plan falls through, closing the door on Cancelo’s return under the new management.

Cancelo’s situation highlights a significant turnaround in his career trajectory. Once regarded as a top-tier full-back and a pivotal player in Pep Guardiola’s title-winning teams of the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons, his standing has now come into question. His high transfer fee, making him the most expensive player in his position to date, underscores the expectations and scrutiny he faces.

For Manchester City, the challenge lies in finding a suitable resolution for Cancelo’s situation. They may consider arranging a third consecutive loan or, preferably, selling him to recoup a substantial portion of the £60 million they invested in 2019. Given the uncertainties surrounding his future and the managerial changes at Barcelona, Cancelo’s next move will be closely watched by both clubs and their supporters.
