Legendary Manchester United player Wayne Rooney has revealed how he plans to balance his new managerial role at Plymouth Argyle with his commitments to the European Championship.
After resigning as head coach of Birmingham City just four months ago, Rooney has re-entered the managerial arena. His tenure at St Andrew’s was unexpectedly short, lasting only 83 days before he was dismissed.
Following his departure, Rooney transitioned to a commentator role, working with Sky Sports and the BBC. He covered notable events such as United’s FA Cup victory over Manchester City.
Now, he faces a new challenge: guiding Plymouth Argyle out of their relegation struggle in the Championship after Ian Foster’s dismissal.
Speaking to Argyle TV, Rooney described his demanding schedule: “Every day is a working day now, whether that’s here or with the kids, and obviously, I have certain duties with the European Championships.” He emphasized his primary objectives, stating, “The main goal of each day is to bring in players, collaborate with the coaches to determine our style of play, and prepare for preseason practice.”
Rooney expressed his excitement about the upcoming busy month, but his real enthusiasm lies in the pre-season, where he will have the opportunity to work closely with the players.
This role at Home Park marks his fourth managerial position, following his experiences with Derby County, DC United, and Birmingham City.
Despite the pressures of managing in the Championship, Rooney believes that his move to the southwest of England represents the “right step” in his career.
“I am quite happy,” Rooney said. “It was a thorough process with many managers interviewed for the position, and happily the club felt I was the right person for the job to take over as Argyle’s next head coach.” He expressed his eagerness to start, saying, “I am eager to begin and get to know the players and staff. There will be a lot of work ahead of us in the next month before the preseason begins.”
