Tottenham Hotspur have yet to find a replacement for Harry Kane after his departure to Bayern Munich last summer.
The North London club has felt the absence of their former captain and star player, who transitioned to the Bundesliga and joined the ranks of the German giants. In a highly successful individual season for Bayern, Kane managed to score an impressive 44 goals.
In their quest to find a suitable successor to Kane, Spurs have identified Sporting Lisbon’s attacker Viktor Gyokeres as a prime candidate, according to reports from Correio da Manha. Gyokeres initially gained attention for his goal-scoring capabilities while playing in the Championship for Coventry City.
Since his transfer to Sporting last summer, the Swedish centre-forward has been a standout performer in the Portuguese top flight. Gyokeres has netted 29 goals and provided 10 assists in 33 appearances for Sporting, showcasing his talent and effectiveness on the field.
Gyokeres’ remarkable form has drawn interest from several clubs, making it challenging for Sporting to retain their valuable asset.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, who signed James Maddison, Guglimlo Vicario, and Micky van de Ven last summer, is keen on bringing Gyokeres to Tottenham Stadium. Despite these signings, Spurs fell short of securing a Champions League spot, finishing just two points behind Aston Villa in the Premier League race for the top four.
The club is ready to offer Gyokeres a return to England, entrusting him with the crucial role of filling Kane’s shoes. Gyokeres played a pivotal role in helping Sporting clinch the league title, finishing 10 points clear of second-placed Benfica.
His performances have not gone unnoticed, and his statements, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano, reflect his awareness of the interest in his services. Gyokeres stated, “I love being at Sporting.
We will see what happens, I can’t promise anything right now… I’m very happy here at Sporting, I’m under contract but things in football are always happening fast, we need to adapt.”
However, signing Gyokeres will not be straightforward for Tottenham. According to Pedro Sepúlveda, Sporting is unwilling to part with the striker for anything less than €100 million.
Despite the financial hurdle, Gyokeres would be an ideal acquisition for Tottenham, as he would bolster their attacking options and share the goal-scoring responsibilities with Son Heung-min.
Spurs are in need of a significant signing to close the gap between them and the Premier League’s top four clubs, and Gyokeres could be the perfect player to provide that opportunity.
