According to Corriere dello Sport, Moroccan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat is keen to “continue his adventure” at Manchester United next season.
The 27-year-old midfielder joined the Red Devils on loan from Fiorentina last summer for €10 million, with United retaining an option to purchase him for €20 million plus €5 million in add-ons. Despite Amrabat’s enthusiasm for staying at Old Trafford, Manchester United’s management does not appear to share this desire.
Amrabat is currently set to return to Fiorentina at the end of June, with the Serie A club already engaged in discussions with Galatasaray about a potential permanent transfer. However, Manchester United still has time to decide whether to exercise their option to buy Amrabat.
When Amrabat joined United last summer, expectations were high. He had been on the radar of several clubs before choosing to sign with United on transfer deadline day.
However, his adaptation to the Premier League’s intensity proved challenging. By early 2024, Amrabat found himself benched, with Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo preferred in midfield.
Despite these initial struggles, Amrabat managed to reclaim a regular starting position in May. He delivered strong performances against top teams like Arsenal and Newcastle United and was also a starter in the FA Cup final, filling in for the slightly injured Casemiro.
These games showcased Amrabat’s true potential, suggesting that he could be a valuable asset for Manchester United. Nonetheless, the club’s hierarchy remains unconvinced about signing him permanently.
Amrabat’s situation is further complicated by the praise he has received from various quarters. Morocco manager Walid Regragui has hailed him as a “world-class” player, emphasizing his capabilities and potential contributions. Despite this, the club’s management remains hesitant, and their decision will likely hinge on the team’s managerial situation.
If Erik ten Hag remains the manager, there might be a chance for Amrabat to stay at Manchester United.
Ten Hag’s influence could persuade the board to retain the midfielder, given his performances towards the end of the season. However, if Ten Hag is replaced, the new manager might prefer to bring in his own targets rather than push for the clubto keep Amrabat.
