Enzo Maresca, the manager of Chelsea, is reportedly looking into a deal to bring Victor Osimhen from Portsmouth as part of his efforts to strengthen the team for the upcoming season, which kicks off in a few weeks.
Chelsea has long been linked with the Napoli forward, whose contract includes a substantial £110 million release clause. Napoli has made it clear that they expect this entire amount if Osimhen is to leave the club this summer.
Speculation suggests that Chelsea might attempt to leverage Romelu Lukaku’s transfer value to negotiate a lower fee for Osimhen. Although the Blues initially decided against pursuing Osimhen, recent reports indicate they are now looking to “advance” their interest in the prolific striker.
However, Chelsea may face stiff competition from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), another top contender. Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that PSG’s negotiations with Osimhen’s camp are progressing well, and the player is reportedly keen on a move to the French capital if a deal can be reached.
Osimhen’s own statements earlier this year hint at his openness to joining Chelsea. In January, during his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria, Osimhen told CBS Sports, “In the conclusion of the season, I guess I have made up my mind.” He expressed confidence in his career decisions and indicated that he has a clear plan for his future, despite early setbacks.
“I have been making my own decisions and doing well in my job since the beginning. I already know what I want to achieve with my life. Even though things didn’t go as planned when I first started, I already have a plan, know what I want to do, and know what my next course of action is,” Osimhen added. “For now, all I want to do is make sure the season ends well, spend some time relaxing with my kid, and then make the decision I’ve already decided upon.”
Further fueling the transfer rumors, Napoli manager Antonio Conte made remarks earlier in the offseason suggesting that the club anticipates Osimhen’s departure this summer. “I am aware of Osimhen’s current circumstances,” Conte said. “I know that there are contracts and that this particular situation is unique.
All I can do is provide support. He is a brilliant player at the highest level, but I cannot have a conversation with him about it as it is covered by prior agreements that I have been fully informed about.”
Conte’s acknowledgment of the forward’s circumstances and the existing contractual agreements underscores the complexity and high stakes involved in any potential transfer.
