Liverpool have made the decision to sell Jurgen Klopp’s favorite player.

Questions have naturally arisen regarding Wataru Endo’s potential to help Liverpool contend for the Premier League title next season. His arrival has sparked discussions about how he compares to elite players like Declan Rice and Rodri, who are often cited as benchmarks for top-tier performance in the league.

Further complicating Endo’s situation are recent reports suggesting that Liverpool might consider selling him if a higher bid is received. David Lynch reported on X (formerly Twitter) that Liverpool could entertain offers for Endo, following the rejection of an initial bid from Marseille. James Pearce has outlined several reasons for this refusal, indicating a complex situation surrounding Endo’s future at the club.

When Endo first arrived at the AXA Training Centre last summer, there was some confusion among fans and analysts, especially since Liverpool had been close to signing Moises Caicedo. The Japanese international, however, quickly proved his worth, exceeding expectations in his debut season. One standout performance was his game against Manchester City at Anfield, which earned him significant praise.

Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager, has spoken highly of Endo. In an interview with BBC Sport, Klopp reflected on Endo’s unexpected rise: “What can you expect? That you sign a 30-year-old captain of Japan and he will be a standout player in the Premier League? That he would be a good player, we knew, but what he’s making of that role, together with Macca, or then with Dom or then with Harvey – by the way, what a game he played… You never know that people can develop to world class, but that’s what happened.”

Klopp’s comments underscore the impressive nature of Endo’s development and his significant contributions to the team. However, the description of Endo as “world-class” might be seen by some as an overstatement. Despite this, there is an appreciation for his efforts and a willingness to retain him at the club if a substantial upgrade cannot be found.

The possibility of selling Endo, especially after an impressive first season, reflects Liverpool’s ongoing strategy to balance immediate performance needs with long-term developmental goals. This includes ensuring that younger players like Stefan Bajcetic are given ample opportunity to grow and integrate into the first team.

In summary, while Endo has faced skepticism and comparisons to top-tier players, his first season at Liverpool has been notably successful. Klopp’s praise highlights his unexpected development, though the club remains pragmatic about his future.

The potential sale, contingent on receiving a higher bid, underscores Liverpool’s strategic approach to team composition and player development. If no significant upgrade is identified, keeping Endo could be beneficial, particularly in not hindering the progress of emerging talents like Bajcetic.
