A Manchester United star player is facing backlash and being labeled a traitor after officially announcing their departure to join rival club Liverpool.

Liverpool is reportedly close to securing their second signing of the summer, as Manchester United defender Gemma Evans is set to make a move to Merseyside.

The summer transfer window has been relatively quiet for Liverpool, with only one previous signing to note. Early in July, they bolstered their squad with the acquisition of Olivia Smith, a midfielder from Sporting CP.

According to BBC journalist Emma Sanders, Evans is nearing a permanent move to Liverpool, with negotiations between the clubs progressing positively. All parties involved are reportedly confident that the deal will soon be finalized.

Gemma Evans, a Wales international, has had a diverse career, playing for several clubs across the UK. She began her professional journey with Cardiff City and Yeovil Town, before moving on to stints at Bristol City and Reading. Last summer, she joined Manchester United, where she contributed to the team under the management of Marc Skinner.

During the 2023/24 season, Evans made 19 appearances across all competitions, including the Women’s Super League, where she registered one assist.

However, out of those 19 appearances, only 12 were in the Women’s Super League, highlighting that while she was a regular part of the squad, she wasn’t always a first-choice option for United.

Manchester United has been quite active in the transfer market this summer. They have brought in several new players, including Dominique Janssen, who joined on a free transfer from Wolfsburg.

Additionally, the signing of Swedish left-back Anna Sandberg has further strengthened United’s defensive line. This influx of new talent has opened the door for Evans to seek a move away from Old Trafford, with Liverpool emerging as a likely destination.

Liverpool’s 2024/25 Women’s Super League campaign is set to begin on September 22, where they will face Leicester City in their opening match. Meanwhile, Manchester United will kick off their season a day earlier, on September 21, with a match against West Ham.

Evans’ potential move to Liverpool marks a significant development in the club’s transfer activities this summer. As Liverpool looks to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season, securing a player with Evans’ experience and versatility could prove to be a valuable addition.

The signing reflects the club’s intent to build a competitive team that can make an impact in the Women’s Super League. If the deal is finalized, Evans will bring her experience from top-tier English football and international competitions to Liverpool, aiming to contribute to their success in the upcoming season.
