Pep Guardiola Sends Strong Message to Ilkay Gundogan: No Room for Retirement at Manchester City

Just over a year after leaving Manchester City for Barcelona, Ilkay Gundogan made a surprising return to the club on Friday. The German midfielder, who originally signed off from City after scoring 60 goals in 304 appearances and lifting 14 trophies during his seven-year tenure, has rejoined the team to take on a new challenge.

At a press conference, City’s manager Pep Guardiola made it clear that Gundogan’s return is not a nostalgic move or a preparation for retirement. “He has not come here to retire or recall the wonderful memories,” Guardiola emphasized.

“Now it is time to get your shoes on and play your best.” Guardiola highlighted that Gundogan’s familiarity with the club, the city, and his teammates means he won’t need much time to settle back in. “He knows the city, he knows the club, he knows his colleagues, the way we want to play; he does not have to adjust,” Guardiola added. This smooth transition was a key factor in City’s decision to bring Gundogan back.

Gundogan played a crucial role in Manchester City’s success between 2021 and 2023, contributing significantly to their three consecutive Premier League titles. His return adds depth and experience to a midfield that, while strong, is also aging.

Alongside Gundogan, City’s only other summer signing has been winger Savinho, who has joined French club Troyes on loan. Gundogan’s arrival on a free transfer is particularly significant, as it leaves City with the £82 million ($107 million) they earned from recent sales to reinvest in new talent.

However, despite this financial flexibility, Guardiola expressed skepticism about the club making any more signings before the transfer window closes on September 1. “I do not think so,” he remarked when asked about the possibility of further additions.

He acknowledged that the situation could change if unforeseen circumstances arise, such as injuries or unexpected opportunities in the transfer market that make financial or strategic sense. But as things stand, Guardiola does not anticipate any more new faces joining the squad this summer.
