Hansi Flick has openly acknowledged that FC Barcelona deserved to win their match against AS Monaco in the Champions League.

Barcelona suffered a disappointing start to their 2024-25 Champions League campaign, losing 2-1 to AS Monaco in their opening match on Thursday. The Catalan side faced a significant setback early in the game, with defender Eric Garcia receiving a red card, forcing Barcelona to play with 10 men for more than 80 minutes.

Despite this disadvantage, they put up a determined fight and managed to equalize after falling behind, but ultimately, Monaco emerged as the victors.

After the match, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick shared his candid assessment of the team’s performance. Flick admitted that Barcelona fell short of what was required to earn any points from the game. He acknowledged that while his team battled hard, the result was fair, with Monaco deserving their victory.

“We tried at all times, but we have to accept that they deserved to win,” Flick said. His comments reflect the reality of the game, as Barcelona’s efforts were not enough to overcome the challenge posed by Monaco, especially while playing a man down for nearly the entire match.

Flick emphasized the need for his team to move forward from the loss, focusing on recovery and preparation for future games.

The Barcelona coach also pointed out that this was just the beginning of the group stage and that his team still has seven more matches to turn things around. “Now we have to recover and come back stronger. We have seven more chances,” Flick said, encouraging his players to bounce back and improve in the upcoming fixtures.

The manager also addressed the issue of player availability, expressing confidence that Barcelona will be a stronger side once their injured players return to full fitness. “We have to accept this defeat. I’m sure that with the injured players back on track, we will be a stronger team,” Flick added.

This statement highlights the current challenges Barcelona faces with a depleted squad, and the optimism that reinforcements could help them regain their form in the coming weeks.

On a positive note, Flick provided an update on young midfielder Marc Casado, who had taken a knock in the final stages of the match. Flick reassured fans that Casado is fine and should be available for selection in Barcelona’s upcoming match against Villarreal this weekend.

Casado’s fitness will be crucial, as Barcelona continues to contend with injuries across the squad, and having him available will bolster their midfield options.

As Barcelona looks ahead to the rest of their Champions League campaign, Flick’s remarks indicate a focus on regrouping and learning from this early setback.

The team will need to show resilience in the face of adversity and find ways to improve as they strive to advance in the competition. While this defeat may have been disappointing, Flick’s belief in the team’s potential to recover and grow stronger offers hope for the challenges ahead.
