With the January transfer window just two weeks away, Liverpool have already been linked to several potential signings, sparking speculation about who could bolster their squad.
Among the rumored targets is Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane, who has been suggested as a possible replacement for Mohamed Salah if the Egyptian forward does not extend his contract at Anfield.
However, recent comments from former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero may suggest otherwise. Aguero claimed that Salah has already agreed to a new two-year deal with Liverpool, which would reduce the club’s urgency to pursue a right-sided forward like Sane. If true, this development could make a move for Sane less likely, at least in the short term.
Adding to the uncertainty, Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg addressed the rumors on Monday evening, sharing on X (formerly Twitter) that the links between Liverpool and Sane are not currently “hot.” According to Plettenberg, there are no internal discussions or concrete plans at Liverpool to sign the 28-year-old winger in January.
He also noted that Sane could potentially leave Bayern Munich as a free agent next summer, as the German club is not actively working on renewing his contract at this stage.
Despite Plettenberg’s dismissal of the rumors, Christian Falk of BILD offered a different perspective. Falk recently claimed that Liverpool have had contact with Sane and that the winger remains on their radar as a potential target. The contrasting reports from these two credible sources highlight the uncertainty surrounding Liverpool’s interest in the Bayern star.
Should Salah extend his stay at Anfield, it is likely Liverpool will shift their transfer priorities to other areas of the squad, particularly defense. Injuries to key players in recent months have exposed a lack of depth at the back, which could prompt sporting director Richard Hughes to focus on reinforcing the defensive line rather than pursuing attacking options like Sane.
As for Sane, his future at Bayern Munich remains uncertain. Contract negotiations have reportedly stalled, opening the possibility that he could leave on a free transfer in the summer.
If Liverpool decide to pursue him at that point, it would echo their interest in other Bayern players, such as Alphonso Davies, who has also been linked with a potential move to Merseyside. For now, however, Sane does not appear to be Liverpool’s top priority as the transfer window approaches.
