Mikel Arteta has revealed that Arsenal are actively looking for internal solutions to manage Bukayo Saka’s absence but are also open to making a move in the January transfer window if an exceptional opportunity arises.
Speaking on Monday, Arteta confirmed that Saka will be sidelined for several weeks after suffering a hamstring tear, adding that the team will also have to cope without fellow winger Raheem Sterling, who is dealing with a knee injury.
Despite these challenges, Arteta emphasized that his primary focus is on utilizing the current squad to remain competitive. He noted that Arsenal has several in-house options to address the situation but admitted that the club would act in the transfer market if the right opportunity presents itself. “We have many, many options within the squad,” Arteta stated. “But if something unbelievable becomes available and the club is willing, we’ll have to consider it.”
Arsenal has a strong track record of successful January signings, having brought in players like Jorginho and Leandro Trossard last year and Martin Odegaard on loan in 2021.
This experience positions the club well to make calculated moves if necessary during the upcoming window.
Arteta also addressed the recent departure of sporting director Edu, who played a key role in assembling Arsenal’s current squad. Jason Ayto has stepped in as interim sporting director, and Arteta expressed confidence in the club’s ability to act decisively next month. “The preparation is done, and we are ready if something happens,” Arteta explained. “We didn’t predict losing both Bukayo and Raheem at the same time. We expected challenges, perhaps in the defensive line, but we are prepared to adapt.”
For now, Arteta is exploring various tactical adjustments to cover for Saka’s absence. In Saturday’s 5-1 victory over Crystal Palace, Gabriel Martinelli filled in on the right wing. Other players, including Ethan Nwaneri, Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, and Leandro Trossard, are being considered as alternatives.
Arteta is optimistic about finding creative solutions, saying, “I have some ideas, but I want to discuss them with the players.
We need to approach this challenge positively, as it will force us to evolve and be different.” He also highlighted Arsenal’s resilience, having previously navigated injuries to key players like Martin Odegaard and several defenders. “We will keep finding ways, and we’ll tackle this with positive energy,”he concluded.
