Amad Diallo has openly shared his thoughts on leadership within Manchester United, naming Lisandro Martinez as the most fitting leader in the squad, a distinction usually associated with current captain Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes, who has been United’s captain since July 2023 after succeeding Harry Maguire, has often faced scrutiny over his leadership approach.
Even club legend Roy Keane, speaking on Sky Sports before the Manchester derby, acknowledged Fernandes’ abilities as a player but emphasized the need for him to elevate his leadership off the pitch.
Despite the criticisms, Fernandes delivered a strong response during the Manchester derby, scoring a pivotal equalizer in United’s dramatic 2-1 win over Manchester City.
However, Amad, who had a game-changing impact in the same match by earning a late penalty and scoring the winner, holds a different opinion.
The young winger regards Martinez as the true leader in the team. When asked by SuperSport to create an ideal Manchester United player by combining attributes from his teammates, Amad selected Martinez for leadership, remarking simply, “Leadership? Licha (Lisandro Martinez).”
Although Fernandes may not be Amad’s choice for leadership, his on-field contributions remain significant. Since joining from Sporting CP nearly five years ago, Fernandes has scored an impressive 85 goals in 257 appearances, underscoring his importance to the team.
His finishing ability, combined with his creative play, has consistently been a key factor in United’s success.
Meanwhile, Amad’s recognition of Martinez underscores the Argentine’s commanding presence and influence within the squad. Known for his defensive solidity and vocal leadership, Martinez has become a central figure for United, embodying resilience and determination.
Amad, who also praised his own left-footed ability in the same interview, has been in exceptional form recently, further solidifying his role as a key player in Erik ten Hag’s plans.
With a crucial Carabao Cup quarter-final against Tottenham on the horizon, both Fernandes and Martinez will have the chance to showcase their leadership qualities.
Fernandes will aim to drive the team’s creativity and goalscoring efforts, while Martinez will look to inspire his teammates through his defensive strength and commanding presence.
Amad’s endorsement of Martinez highlights the variety of leadership styles present in the squad.
This diversity, combined with Amad’s rising influence, could play a pivotal role as Manchester United competes for silverware in both domestic and international competitions this season.
