A recent wave of reports suggesting Elon Musk’s interest in acquiring Liverpool FC has sparked significant discussion among the club’s supporters.
The speculation originated from a radio interview with Musk’s father, who revealed that the billionaire entrepreneur “would like to” add the iconic football club to his expansive business portfolio, which already includes Tesla, SpaceX, and X (formerly Twitter).
Despite the uproar on social media, where many Liverpool fans have expressed alarm over the potential ownership shift, early signs indicate that such fears are largely unfounded. Both Liverpool’s current owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), and trusted sources close to the matter have downplayed the likelihood of a sale to Musk or any other party.
Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol was among those to address the rumors, reassuring fans that Liverpool FC remains firmly off the market. Speaking on the matter, Solhekol stated, “Liverpool are not for sale.
The owners have not received any offers or approaches, including from Elon Musk.” He further explained that while FSG did explore external investment opportunities around two-and-a-half years ago, no agreements were finalized.
John Henry, FSG’s principal owner, has previously affirmed that the club is not for sale, although he acknowledged that the group would not own Liverpool forever.
Solhekol also touched on Musk’s controversial reputation and its potential conflict with Liverpool’s values. While Musk’s immense wealth would theoretically enable him to make a bid for the club, Solhekol noted that Liverpool’s fanbase might view such a move unfavorably.
Still, he added that Musk could likely meet the Premier League’s owners and directors test if he were to seriously pursue ownership
This perspective aligns with a report from The Times journalist Matt Lawton, who similarly emphasized FSG’s lack of interest in selling Liverpool FC.
Lawton noted that despite criticism from sections of the fanbase, including frequent calls for the owners to step down through the hashtag #FSGOUT, the prospect of Musk taking over has generated even greater disapproval. Many fans appear to prefer the relative stability FSG provides over the uncertainties associated with a high-profile and controversial figure like Musk.
In summary, while Musk’s reported interest has stirred speculation, there is no indication that Liverpool FC’s current ownership is considering selling the club.
