Turkish football giants Fenerbahce are reportedly in active negotiations with Manchester City to sign goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, according to reports from Sky Germany. Ortega, who is currently 32 years old, joined Manchester City in 2022 on a free transfer after departing German side Arminia Bielefeld.
Since his arrival at the Etihad Stadium, he has largely been used as a backup option behind City’s first-choice goalkeeper, Ederson. Although Ortega has impressed in some of the matches he featured in, his role has remained limited, mostly stepping in for domestic cup competitions or when Ederson has been unavailable.
However, his future at Manchester City now appears increasingly uncertain following recent changes in the club’s goalkeeping department. City have reportedly finalised a deal to bring back James Trafford from Burnley in a transfer worth around £27 million.
While it is still unclear whether Trafford will immediately be made a regular starter, his return adds significant competition for the goalkeeper spot and likely reduces Ortega’s already limited opportunities for regular first-team action.
Ortega has just under a year left on his contract with Manchester City, which further fuels speculation that he could be allowed to leave the club during this summer transfer window.
Given the circumstances surrounding his contract and his quality as a reliable and experienced goalkeeper, City are expected to demand a relatively low transfer fee, making him a potentially shrewd signing for any club in need of a dependable shot-stopper.
The German goalkeeper is reportedly eager to secure regular playing time as he approaches the twilight years of his career. With City’s goalkeeping situation becoming more crowded, a move away seems like the most viable option if he wants to remain active at the top level.
Ortega has had brief spells where he appeared to challenge Ederson for the starting position, but long-term consistency in that role never materialised under Pep Guardiola.
Fenerbahce’s interest provides Ortega with an attractive opportunity to join a respected and competitive European club where he could assume the position of first-choice goalkeeper.
The Turkish Super Lig side are known for their passionate fan base and regular participation in European competitions, which could offer Ortega both the visibility and the game time he seeks. However, the Turkish outfit are not alone in the race for his signature.
Reports suggest that several Premier League teams, including recently promoted Burnley, are also keeping tabs on Ortega and may attempt to bring him in before the new season begins.
