Real Madrid identify world-class Manchester City star as key transfer target this summer

Real Madrid are reportedly planning a major transfer swoop for Manchester City’s midfield general and captain, Rodri, as part of a broader effort to reshape their midfield following the retirement of Toni Kroos.

Sources close to the situation have revealed that Rodri is regarded as a “key target” for incoming manager Xabi Alonso, who sees the Ballon d’Or winner as the perfect fit to anchor his tactical setup at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Known for his composure, intelligence, and leadership, Rodri’s qualities make him a highly attractive option to lead Madrid’s midfield for years to come.

According to CaughtOffside, Real Madrid even went as far as considering a stunning proposal to lure Manchester City into talks.

The reported package included top talents Rodrygo and Eduardo Camavinga, along with an additional €40 million in cash. This indicates just how serious Madrid are about acquiring Rodri’s services.

However, Manchester City have shown no intention of entertaining offers for one of their most influential players. Under their new sporting director, Hugo Viana, City are determined to retain Rodri and are currently working on a contract extension that would keep him at the Etihad until the summer of 2030.

This move would not only ward off further interest from suitors but also reflect Rodri’s importance to Pep Guardiola’s system.

Rodri, who won the 2024 Ballon d’Or after a remarkable season, is widely considered one of the world’s best midfielders. His current contract with City runs until 2027, but Real Madrid are reportedly keeping a close eye on his situation. Club insiders believe that if Rodri opts not to sign a new contract, a more realistic opportunity to secure his signature could arise next summer.

By 2026, when he enters the final year of his deal, his market value may drop significantly to around €60–€80 million. On the other hand, should City succeed in tying him down to a long-term deal, Madrid would be forced to meet a much steeper valuation.

One factor that could affect Madrid’s pursuit is Rodri’s recent injury history. He suffered an ACL injury in September, which kept him out for a prolonged period.

Though he has since returned to action, Real Madrid are reportedly cautious about making such a heavy investment in a player whose long-term fitness could be a concern. Nevertheless, support for Rodri’s signing continues to grow within the club, with club legend Toni Kroos said to be a big admirer of his style of play.

Despite the growing interest from Madrid, City’s efforts to extend Rodri’s deal suggest they are unwilling to lose their midfield talisman any time soon. As things stand, a transfer this summer appears unlikely, but Real Madrid are prepared to wait for the right moment.
