Scott McTominay has accepted a move back to Manchester United after internal discussions between the player’s camp and the club

Manchester United are preparing a determined and emotionally charged campaign to bring Scott McTominay back to Old Trafford, after witnessing his remarkable rise into one of Serie A’s most influential midfielders since joining Napoli.

What once seemed like a routine transfer has now become a decision the club deeply regrets, and they are ready to explore every possibility to reverse it.

According to Mark Brus of Caught Offside, United’s interest goes far beyond casual admiration. The club’s hierarchy is seriously considering a move to re-sign the Scottish international, viewing his departure as one of the most significant errors made during Erik ten Hag’s tenure.

McTominay left Manchester for approximately £25 million in August 2024, but his explosive growth in Italy has left United questioning how they allowed such a key player to slip away.

Following Ten Hag’s departure and the appointment of Ruben Amorim, the club began to observe McTominay’s performances with increasing disbelief. Under the strict, structured guidance of Antonio Conte, the midfielder has become a crucial figure in Napoli’s championship-winning side.

His transformation into a complete, high-impact midfielder is exactly what United’s current squad seems to lack — energy, goal threat, and tactical discipline.

The statistics highlight his impact clearly. In his debut Serie A season, McTominay scored 12 goals and provided 4 assists in 34 league matches an output far superior to anything he consistently delivered in England.

Though his current season has been more muted, recording 2 goals and 1 assist in 10 appearances so far, he remains central to Conte’s system and a dependable figure in the midfield.

Unsurprisingly, Manchester United are not alone in their admiration. Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, and even Barcelona are said to be monitoring McTominay’s situation closely.

However, any pursuit is expected to be extremely challenging. McTominay has adapted comfortably to life in Italy, and Napoli have no plans to part ways with a player they consider essential.

Italian journalist Vincenzo Credendino shed light on the source of McTominay’s resurgence. Conte, instead of using him as a conventional playmaker, repositioned him as a late-arriving attacking midfielder  a role previously perfected by Juventus legends like Arturo Vidal and Claudio Marchisio.

This adjustment enabled McTominay to exploit his natural instincts: powerful runs, timing into the box, and clinical finishing.

McTominay has repeatedly spoken with pride about his experience in Naples. He has praised the passionate supporters, the vibrant culture of the city, and the strong bond shared within the team. He maintains that he has no regrets about leaving Manchester United when he did.

Nevertheless, United’s renewed determination to bring him back underlines just how highly they value what he has become  and how strongly they now feel that letting him go may have been one of the club’s biggest misjudgments in recent years.
