Manchester United are reportedly accelerating efforts to secure what could be one of the most ambitious signings of their current rebuild: Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni.
Fresh reports from Spain suggest that United are making an aggressive push behind the scenes, convinced that the French international would be the perfect centerpiece for their future midfield plans.
At present, United’s midfield features Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte, and rising star Kobbie Mainoo. Manager Ruben Amorim has experimented with different combinations, even slotting Bruno Fernandes into a deeper role at times.
However, it is widely understood that the United captain performs far better when he operates close to the final third, where his creativity and goal-scoring instincts can flourish.
Mason Mount has also been mentioned as a player who could function in a deeper position, but like Fernandes, his strengths lie higher up the pitch.
This season, Amorim has leaned heavily on the duo of Casemiro and Fernandes as his preferred midfield pairing.
As a consequence, Kobbie Mainoo has seen his minutes reduced and is reportedly unhappy with his reduced opportunities.
Rumors indicate that the young midfielder may consider a move away in January if he continues to struggle for consistent playing time.
Ugarte, on the other hand, has not capitalized on the opportunities he has been given. His performances have often lacked impact, raising doubts about whether he can be a long-term part of United’s project.
And with Casemiro’s contract entering its final stretch — due to expire next summer — the club is preparing for a significant midfield restructuring.
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Manchester United have already submitted a formal proposal to Real Madrid for Tchouaméni.
The bid is reportedly around £79 million, consisting of a £62 million initial fee and an additional £17 million in performance-related bonuses. Real Madrid’s response was immediate and uncompromising: Tchouaméni is not for sale.
Despite receiving criticism in the previous campaign, the midfielder has become a vital figure this season under Xabi Alonso, earning a place as a guaranteed starter.
Even with their opening offer turned down, Manchester United are allegedly not discouraged. Instead, the club is intensifying their efforts by attempting to persuade Tchouaméni directly. Their hope is that if the player becomes open to the move, Madrid may eventually soften their stance.
At 25 years old and standing 6ft 2in tall, Tchouaméni possesses an impressive blend of attributes. His natural position is as a defensive midfielder, but he is equally capable of pushing forward with box-to-box energy or dropping into central defense when required.
His combination of physical power, composure on the ball, strong tackling, aerial dominance, and excellent long-range distribution makes him one of the most complete midfielders of his generation.
Many believe his style is perfectly suited to the intensity of the Premier League. Should Manchester United somehow convince both Tchouaméni and Real Madrid, it would not only transform their midfield but also send a message across Europe: United are returning to compete at the highest level with serious intent.
