The former United goalkeeper revealed that a single moment in training changed everything — a comment from Ruben Amorim that left him shocked, humiliated, and mentally checked out of the project

In a dramatic revelation that has sparked widespread debate among fans, Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has finally spoken openly about the real reason behind his recent loan move to Turkish side Trabzonspor.

Contrary to speculation that his exit was performance-related, the Cameroonian international insists his decision was driven by a deeply unsettling exchange with head coach Ruben Amorim during a training session—an incident he describes as the most disrespectful moment of his professional career.

Onana, 27, arrived at Manchester United with enormous expectations following standout spells with Ajax and Inter Milan, as well as his commanding presence for the Cameroon national team.

Known for his confidence on the ball, sharp reflexes, and leadership from the back, he was widely viewed as a goalkeeper capable of redefining United’s style of play.

However, despite flashes of quality, his time at Old Trafford soon became complicated by internal competition and shifting dynamics within the squad.

Speaking candidly in a recent interview, Onana rejected claims that his departure was linked to poor form or a lack of confidence.

Instead, he explained that a particular comment made by Amorim during training fundamentally altered his relationship with the club.

According to Onana, the remark crossed a personal line and left him feeling undervalued and disrespected, ultimately convincing him that staying would not be beneficial for his career or mental well-being.

“I didn’t leave because I wasn’t good enough,” Onana reportedly explained. “I left because of what was said to me.

As a professional, there are things you can accept, and there are things you can’t. That moment made everything clear for me.”

Despite the painful nature of the incident, Onana was careful to acknowledge Amorim’s overall reputation as a tactician and developer of talent.

He admitted that, outside of that disagreement, he respects the coach’s footballing philosophy and track record.

However, he stressed that mutual respect between player and manager is essential, especially at the highest level of the game.

With limited opportunities to establish himself as a guaranteed starter at United, Onana began to prioritize regular playing time.

The loan move to Trabzonspor offered exactly that—a fresh environment, consistent minutes, and a chance to rebuild confidence away from the intense scrutiny of the Premier League. For Onana, the decision was as much about personal growth as it was about football.

He also expressed gratitude to Manchester United for allowing the move, noting that the club handled the situation professionally despite the underlying tensions.

“At this stage of my career, I need to be playing every week,” he said. “That’s how you improve, regain rhythm, and enjoy football again.”

Trabzonspor, a club known for its passionate supporters and fierce competitive spirit, now represents a new chapter for the goalkeeper.

Onana spoke enthusiastically about embracing Turkish football, highlighting the club’s rich history and the energy of its fanbase. He sees the move as an opportunity to reset, refocus, and remind the football world of his true ability.

As he settles into life in Turkey, Onana remains determined to prove that his departure from Manchester United was not a step backward, but a strategic move toward rediscovering his best form.

With a point to prove and regular football ahead of him, this next phase could be crucial in redefining his career trajectory and restoring his standing among Europe’s elite goalkeepers.
