Joshua Zirkzee’s situation at Manchester United appears increasingly uncertain, and his half-time substitution during the recent 1–1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers only reinforced the sense that his days at Old Trafford may be numbered.
Even though the Dutch forward found the net in that match, being withdrawn so early sent a strong message about his standing under the current setup.
With reports emerging that AS Roma are keen on signing him in the January transfer window, it is becoming clear that Zirkzee’s future with United hangs by a thread.
A Thin Forward Line
If Zirkzee does depart, Manchester United could suddenly find themselves dangerously short of attacking options. At present, Benjamin Šeško stands as the club’s only established centre-forward.
While Zirkzee is nominally a striker, his performances have consistently suggested that he is more effective when playing off another forward rather than leading the line on his own.
Beyond Šeško, the only alternative is teenage prospect Chido Obi. However, the youngster is still viewed as a long-term project and not yet ready to shoulder the responsibility of regular first-team football at such a demanding level.
This leaves United in a precarious position: allowing Zirkzee to leave without a replacement would almost certainly force the club into the transfer market.
Yet, securing a high-quality forward during the January window is notoriously difficult, with inflated prices and limited availability.
A Missed Chance with Semenyo
One potential solution had briefly emerged in the form of Antoine Semenyo.
Unlike many January targets, he appeared attainable and capable of making an immediate impact. However, Manchester City’s interest has effectively removed him from United’s reach, closing off what looked like a rare opportunity in an otherwise challenging market.
With Semenyo no longer an option, United’s search for a reliable striker has intensified.
Jean-Philippe Mateta Enters the Frame
Attention has now reportedly shifted to Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta, with Manchester Evening News suggesting he is under consideration as a possible replacement for Zirkzee. Mateta offers something United value highly: proven Premier League experience.
The club has increasingly prioritised players who can adapt quickly to English football, a strategy that paid off with summer arrivals Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, both of whom have settled seamlessly and delivered strong performances.
Mateta fits this profile well. In fact, his display against United at Selhurst Park earlier in the season left a strong impression.
He produced one of the most dominant centre-forward performances United have faced this campaign, repeatedly troubling Matthijs de Ligt with his physicality, movement, and hold-up play.
Tactical Suitability and Financial Hurdles
Another factor working in Mateta’s favour is his familiarity with the 3-4-2-1 system, the same formation Ruben Amorim prefers.
This tactical understanding could allow him to slot into the United side with minimal adjustment, sharing attacking responsibilities with Šeško rather than replacing him outright.
The major stumbling block, however, is cost.
Crystal Palace are believed to have rejected bids of around £50 million from Champions League clubs in the summer, a figure they would likely demand again in January.
For a player approaching his 29th birthday, that valuation is considered steep, especially for a club carefully managing its transfer budget.
Unless Palace are willing to lower their demands, United may have to delay any move until the summer.
Experience Versus Long-Term Planning
United’s need for experience up front is clear. Šeško has immense potential, but he requires support from a seasoned forward who can help carry the scoring burden and guide him through difficult matches.
Balancing that immediate need with concerns over resale value and budget constraints will define United’s decision-making as the January window approaches.
