Manchester United have officially moved on from Ruben Amorim, bringing an end to a deeply unsettled chapter at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese coach was dismissed on Monday following a spell marked by tension, inconsistency, and growing unrest both on and off the pitch.
Emotions were already running high at the Theatre of Dreams after Amorim’s explosive post-match remarks following Sunday’s 1–1 Premier League draw with Leeds United at Elland Road on January 4. That public outburst appeared to be the final straw in a relationship that had been deteriorating for weeks.
United’s recent form only worsened the situation, with the team managing just three victories from their last ten league fixtures. Eventually, INEOS concluded that a change in leadership was unavoidable and made the decisive call to relieve Amorim of his duties.
Amorim arrived at Manchester United in November 2024, carrying significant expectations after revitalizing Sporting Clube de Portugal during a successful four-year reign in Lisbon.
However, his transition to English football proved far more challenging. United struggled badly during the 2024/25 campaign, finishing a disappointing 15th in the Premier League and narrowly losing the Europa League final 1–0 to Tottenham Hotspur.
Despite those setbacks, the club’s new ownership structure continued to show faith in Amorim over the summer.
INEOS sanctioned more than £200 million in transfer spending to support his project, bringing in attacking talents such as Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Šeško, along with goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
While there were brief flashes of attacking improvement. particularly in the final third—the team never found the consistency required to compete at the highest level, prompting the club’s hierarchy to intervene.
Ultimately, Amorim leaves Old Trafford with an unenviable record. Across 63 matches in all competitions, he registered just 24 victories, a return far below expectations for a club of United’s stature.
Club icon Rio Ferdinand has weighed in publicly, offering his own shortlist of potential successors. Posting on social media, Ferdinand suggested four options: current Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi, England national team manager Thomas Tuchel, former Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernández, and Fletcher himself—provided he impresses during his interim spell.
De Zerbi is no stranger to Premier League football, having previously earned praise for his work with Brighton & Hove Albion, and has been linked with United in the past.
Xavi, meanwhile, remains a long-standing interest for the club’s hierarchy and is believed to be under serious consideration. Tuchel was also on INEOS’ radar during the summer of 2024, before the club opted to persist with Erik ten Hag at that time.
As for Fletcher, despite his solid work within United’s youth setup, his lack of senior managerial experience could count against him in a permanent appointment.
For supporters, this latest managerial upheaval feels painfully familiar. Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, United have been trapped in a relentless cycle of rebuilding projects, false dawns, and abrupt endings.
Amorim’s departure only adds to the uncertainty surrounding a club still searching for stability and identity.
