Gary Lineker has weighed in on the ongoing saga surrounding Marcus Rashford, insisting that a permanent move away from Manchester United could be the best decision for the forward’s career

The future of Marcus Rashford has once again become a subject of debate, particularly after comments from former England striker Gary Lineker regarding where the forward should continue his career.

Rashford, who is currently spending the season on loan at FC Barcelona from Manchester United, appears to have rediscovered a sense of balance and comfort since making the move to Spain.

This change in environment seems to have helped him regain some stability that had been difficult to maintain during the final phase of his time at Old Trafford.

During a recent episode of The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker openly expressed the view that a permanent move to Barcelona would likely be the most beneficial step for Rashford at this point in his career.

According to the former striker, remaining in Spain could allow the forward to continue rebuilding his confidence and return to the level of performance that once made him one of England’s most exciting attacking players.

Lineker also emphasized that staying in Barcelona might protect Rashford from the intense media scrutiny that often surrounds footballers playing in England.

Rashford’s challenges at Manchester United began to emerge following the appointment of Rúben Amorim as the club’s manager in November 2024.

The managerial change coincided with a difficult period for the forward, during which he gradually fell out of favor within the team.

Over time, his involvement with the first team became more limited, eventually leading to a loan move away from the club.

Before arriving at Barcelona, Rashford briefly spent time on loan at Aston Villa. That temporary spell was followed by his move to the Spanish giants last summer, a transfer that many observers believed could offer him the opportunity for a fresh start in a new environment.

Since settling in Catalonia, Rashford has made a positive impact on the pitch. His performances have contributed significantly to the team’s attacking play, as reflected in his statistics of 10 goals and 13 assists in 37 appearances across all competitions.

Those numbers suggest that the change of surroundings has helped the England international rediscover his form and confidence.

Lineker believes that the contrast between the football cultures in Spain and England may be one of the main reasons behind Rashford’s improvement.

In Spain, he argues, players tend to receive greater privacy outside the stadium, allowing them to concentrate primarily on their performances. By comparison, the media environment in England can be far more intense and intrusive.

According to Lineker, Rashford often found himself at the center of widespread public discussion during his time in England.

Stories frequently extended beyond his football performances and focused on aspects of his personal life.

Even his well-known charitable work and personal lifestyle choices sometimes became topics of debate, creating additional pressure in an already demanding profession.

Because of this experience, Lineker warned that a return to Manchester United could place Rashford back into the same cycle of constant scrutiny.

Although the club is currently under the temporary leadership of Michael Carrick, the former striker believes the intense media spotlight surrounding English football would likely remain unchanged.

For that reason, he suggested that continuing his career in Spain might allow Rashford to maintain the sense of calm he has rediscovered.

In an environment where the focus is primarily on football, he could continue developing his game without the distractions that sometimes dominate headlines in England.

At present, Barcelona reportedly hold the option to convert Rashford’s loan move into a permanent transfer for around £26 million. However, the situation is not entirely straightforward.

While negotiations regarding personal terms are believed to be progressing, the club is currently dealing with financial considerations and an upcoming presidential election, both of which could influence the final decision.

Barcelona’s sporting department is also evaluating its priorities for the next transfer window. Strengthening the defense and midfield areas of the squad may take precedence, which has created some internal debate about whether committing to Rashford immediately is the best financial decision.

Despite these uncertainties, many sources suggest that Rashford himself would prefer to remain in Spain if the opportunity arises.

From Lineker’s perspective, staying at Barcelona would provide the forward with the most favorable conditions to continue rebuilding his career while maintaining the sense of stability and peace of mind he appears to have found since leaving the intense spotlight of English football.
