‘We have to wake up’ – Dominik Szoboszlai passionately laments Liverpool performance

Dominik Szoboszlai admitted that Liverpool F.C. would have to lower their expectations if they continue performing the way they did in their frustrating draw against Tottenham Hotspur F.C..

The Hungarian midfielder did not hide his disappointment after the match, especially after seeing his side surrender a late lead that looked certain to deliver all three points.

Szoboszlai had given Liverpool the perfect start to the game when he found the back of the net early on, putting the home side ahead and setting the tone for what appeared to be a confident performance.

For much of the first half, Liverpool controlled proceedings and looked comfortable. However, their failure to maintain the same intensity in the second half eventually proved costly. Just when it seemed like the Reds would secure the victory, Richarlison struck in the 89th minute to snatch a dramatic equaliser for Tottenham, leaving Liverpool players and supporters stunned.

Reflecting on the disappointing result after the match, Szoboszlai admitted he struggled to explain what went wrong. He described the feeling in the dressing room as deeply frustrating, particularly because it was not the first time this season that Liverpool had conceded a decisive late goal. According to him, the team needs to quickly realise the seriousness of the situation and make significant improvements if they want to compete at the highest level.

The midfielder openly expressed how deflated he felt after the final whistle. He suggested that if Liverpool continue to drop points in such a manner, they might have to settle for much lower ambitions than they would normally expect. In fact, he hinted that even qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League would be considered acceptable if their current performances remain unchanged. His comment highlighted just how concerned he is about the team’s recent struggles.

Szoboszlai also analysed the difference between the two halves of the match. He believed Liverpool performed very well in the opening period, controlling possession and limiting Tottenham’s opportunities. Apart from a few headers and isolated chances, he felt the opposition had very little impact during that time. However, the same level of control disappeared after the break, and Liverpool failed to replicate the approach that had worked so effectively earlier in the game.

Looking ahead, Szoboszlai emphasised that the players must come together and discuss the issues honestly. He acknowledged that the team is currently going through a difficult phase, but insisted the only way forward is unity and determination. According to him, the squad must remain united and support each other as they try to overcome the challenges they are facing.

He also addressed the reaction from supporters following the late equaliser. Although he said he did not personally hear the boos, he admitted that the fans’ frustration is understandable. Liverpool players know they are not performing to the level expected of them, and that naturally leads to disappointment among supporters.

At the same time, Szoboszlai urged fans to continue standing behind the team during this challenging period. He reminded them of the joy everyone shared last season when Liverpool secured the league title with several matches still left to play. Moments like that, he suggested, show the strong connection between the team and its supporters.

Despite the recent setbacks, Szoboszlai remains hopeful that the season can still be turned around. He believes there is enough time for the squad to prove their determination and show how much they care about representing the club. For him, the key now is unity, resilience, and a collective effort to fight for the badge and restore the team’s form.
