Liverpool locked horns with Brighton & Hove Albion at the American Express Community Stadium earlier today, aiming to secure a positive result away from home in the Premier League. However, it proved to be a frustrating outing for the Reds, who struggled to find consistency throughout the match.
The visitors endured a sluggish start and were punished early on when Danny Welbeck opened the scoring in the 14th minute, giving Brighton the early advantage.
Liverpool responded well as the first half progressed and eventually found their equaliser in the 30th minute through Milos Kerkez, who finished confidently to bring his side level. Both teams went into the half-time break with the score tied at 1-1, setting up what looked like an evenly poised second half.
After the restart, Brighton regained control, and Welbeck struck once again in the 56th minute to restore his team’s lead. Despite Liverpool’s efforts to respond, they were unable to find another breakthrough, ultimately falling to a disappointing 2-1 defeat. It was a result that highlighted some familiar issues for Liverpool F.C. under Arne Slot, particularly in terms of converting possession into clear-cut chances.
Looking at the individual performances, Giorgi Mamardashvili had a fairly solid game in goal, making a number of important saves to keep his team in contention, although he was ultimately beaten twice and could do little about either goal.
At right-back, Jeremie Frimpong showed glimpses of attacking intent and energy but lacked the final product when it mattered most in the attacking third. In central defence, Ibrahima Konate performed reasonably well in his defensive duties but struggled to contain Welbeck’s influence in key moments.
Alongside him, Virgil van Dijk delivered a steady defensive display but was not at his best when distributing the ball from the back.
On the left side, Kerkez not only contributed defensively with a couple of key ball recoveries but also made a crucial impact going forward by scoring Liverpool’s only goal of the match. In midfield, Ryan Gravenberch put in a commendable all-round performance, showing composure and energy, although his efforts did not translate into a decisive contribution.
Alexis Mac Allister was solid defensively, making a couple of vital interceptions, but he lacked creativity and sharpness in the final third.
Further forward, Florian Wirtz combined well with his teammates during the first half but faded after the break and struggled to influence proceedings.
Dominik Szoboszlai was arguably one of Liverpool’s more industrious players, working hard in attacking areas, but his delivery and decision-making let him down at crucial times. On the left wing, Cody Gakpo posed a threat with his movement and dribbling but never truly looked like scoring.
Up front, Hugo Ekitike endured a frustrating afternoon, as he was forced off with an injury just seven minutes into the game, leaving him without a meaningful contribution.
Among the substitutes, Curtis Jones did well to retain possession in tight areas and offered some control in midfield. Rio Ngumoha showed promise with a few energetic runs, while Andy Robertson provided experience and stability after coming on but was unable to significantly alter the outcome of the match.
Overall, it was a disappointing performance and result for Liverpool, who will need to improve both defensively and offensively if they are to bounce back in their upcoming fixtures.
