Manchester City have made their stance very clear regarding Savinho’s future, with Pep Guardiola confirming that the club’s intention has always been to keep hold of the talented Brazilian winger. Since arriving from Troyes within the City Football Group structure last year, the youngster has proven to be a valuable option across both wings, recording an impressive 10 Premier League assists in the 2024/25 season alone.
After Savinho’s return to the starting XI in City’s crucial win against Burnley, Guardiola stressed just how much the club values the player. “We were so clear that we want to keep him,” the manager insisted, underlining the importance Savinho holds in his plans.
Interest had come from Tottenham Hotspur during the summer window, but City refused to sanction a move. Guardiola hinted that Spurs’ bid might not have been enough to persuade the club to part ways with him. “It depends on the offer. Maybe the offer was not good enough for the club, I don’t know,” he remarked. Pep went on to praise the 20-year-old’s abilities, highlighting his blistering pace, versatility on both flanks, and his ability to handle heavy minutes at such a young age.
Reports suggest that Tottenham had tabled a £42 million ($56m) offer, which City turned down, as they were said to be holding out for closer to £67 million ($90m). This aligns with the club’s long-standing policy of only selling if the price is right, a strategy previously applied with players such as Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez. City initially paid around £30 million ($40m) for Savinho, and cashing in at their valuation would have more than doubled their investment within a year.
Despite that, the clearer picture is that City never truly wanted to lose him. Instead, they have now agreed a new contract extension until 2031, adding two more years onto his existing deal. Guardiola confirmed this progress, noting that other players like Rico Lewis and Nico O’Reilly had also recently extended their stays. He stressed the importance of showing players the club’s commitment to them, rewarding their progress with long-term stability.
Nico O’Reilly was the latest academy graduate to sign a fresh deal until 2030. The versatile youngster, who has impressed as a makeshift left-back, expressed his joy and credited his mother for supporting his football journey since childhood.
As for Savinho, after recovering from injury and making his first Premier League start of the season against Burnley, his focus is now on securing more minutes. With the ability to play on both flanks, he is expected to be a key rotational piece alongside Oscar Bobb and Jeremy Doku as City push forward in their campaign.
