Kobbie Mainoo has finally chosen his next club after 12 top European teams registered strong interest in the Manchester United midfielder

Kobbie Mainoo has reportedly made a firm decision about his future, choosing Napoli as his preferred destination for the upcoming January transfer window—despite being pursued by a remarkable 12 clubs across Europe.

Interest in the Manchester United midfielder has grown rapidly, but the 20-year-old remains focused on a move to Italy, with negotiations already progressing behind the scenes.

Mainoo had attempted to secure an exit toward the end of the previous summer window after finding himself relegated to the bench under new manager Ruben Amorim.

However, Manchester United blocked any transfer, hoping his situation would improve as the season unfolded. Unfortunately, little has changed since then.

The young England international has yet to start a Premier League match this season, accumulating only 183 minutes of game time — all from substitute appearances.

His introduction late in the match against Wolves on Monday night was greeted with enormous applause from the away fans, highlighting how highly he is still regarded by the United faithful.

Yet Amorim has stood firm, insisting he will not rush Mainoo back into a starting role simply because supporters want to see him involved. The manager continues to emphasize that squad decisions will be made strictly on his tactical judgment.

Napoli’s interest in Mainoo dates all the way back to late August, when they first explored the possibility of bringing him to Italy.

The Serie A club has earned a reputation for reviving the careers of players who have struggled for opportunities abroad.

Scott McTominay’s resurgence in Naples and Rasmus Højlund rediscovering his scoring form — including a brace last weekend against Juventus — are recent examples that Mainoo is believed to have taken note of.

Alongside Napoli, at least 12 other clubs have shown concrete interest in the midfielder. Chelsea and Bayern Munich were among the first to be linked with him earlier in the season, but sources now indicate that Mainoo’s heart is set on Serie A.

The contrast between where he stands now and where he was just two seasons ago is stark. Nearly two years ago at Molineux, Mainoo stunned Wolves with a brilliant last-minute winner during his breakout campaign — a rise that eventually led to him starting in the Euro 2024 final against Spain.

Today, however, he finds himself behind almost the entire midfield pecking order.

Only two senior players have played fewer minutes: academy centre-back Tyler Fredricson and Lisandro Martínez, who is still recovering from a major knee injury.

United’s lighter fixture list this season has reduced chances for rotation, and early signs suggest Mainoo is not close to reclaiming a starting spot even as the schedule becomes busier leading into the Christmas period.

Unless something changes quickly, the pressure for United to allow him to leave — at least temporarily — will only grow.

According to the Daily Mail, despite all the options on the table, Mainoo continues to push for Napoli specifically. However, Manchester United have yet to approve any move, as they would need to secure a suitable replacement before letting him depart.

Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna addressed the rumours this week. Speaking to Sky Sports Italia, he acknowledged the links, saying:

“He is a player who has been associated with Napoli since August, largely because of his age, his potential, and the opportunities he could have here.”

For now, negotiations are ongoing, but Mainoo’s preference is clear. Whether Manchester United choose to grant that wish in January remains the biggest unanswered question.
