Liverpool’s stuttering 2025–26 season has come under fresh examination following candid criticism from former Premier League striker and pundit Chris Sutton.
The ex-Chelsea forward has raised concerns not only about Liverpool’s overall performances but also about the declining influence of key figures under Arne Slot, including Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.
With the reigning champions now battling for a Champions League spot rather than the title, Sutton’s comments have intensified the debate around the club’s direction.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, Sutton offered an unfiltered assessment of Liverpool’s campaign, suggesting that underlying problems have been present for much longer than recent results indicate. Concerns Over Liverpool’s Performances

While acknowledging that Slot’s side initially picked up points through resilience rather than style, Sutton argued that those results papered over deeper tactical and technical shortcomings.
He noted that although grinding out wins can sometimes be a positive sign, it has become a long-term pattern rather than a short-term adjustment. According to Sutton, many supporters have grown frustrated with the lack of entertainment and control in Liverpool’s football. He also questioned whether the team has delivered a truly dominant performance this season, pointing out that full 90-minute displays of quality have been rare.

Sutton reserved particularly strong criticism for Mohamed Salah, suggesting that the Egyptian forward has been far below his usual standards. While Salah continues to register goals and assists, Sutton argued that his overall sharpness and influence have noticeably declined. Compared to his remarkable output last season, his contributions this year have felt less decisive and less frequent.
Virgil van Dijk also came under scrutiny. Sutton claimed the Liverpool captain’s performances no longer reflect the elite level he once set, noting a visible drop in consistency and authority. For a team that relies heavily on leadership at both ends of the pitch, any regression from such senior figures inevitably affects the entire squad.
Tactical and Squad Issues Under Slot
Beyond individual form, Sutton highlighted structural problems within the team. He questioned Liverpool’s defensive stability, pointing to the constant changes at right-back as a clear example of disrupted continuity. Injuries and rotation have forced Slot into regular reshuffles, making it difficult for the side to build cohesion.
Midfield performances were also criticised, with Sutton suggesting that players who excelled last season have failed to replicate those levels.
