Supporters quickly took to social media questioning how such a big call could be ignored in a match of this intensity

It proved to be an evening filled with tension and turning points at Old Trafford, where Manchester United FC mounted a comeback to defeat Crystal Palace FC 2–1.

Despite the dramatic nature of the result, much of the post-match reaction revolved around a highly debated decision in the second half that ultimately changed the course of the contest.

The away side made a blistering start, silencing the home support within minutes. In just the fourth minute, Maxence Lacroix rose above Leny Yoro to meet a corner delivery, powering a header beyond the goalkeeper.

The early breakthrough marked the quickest goal United have conceded at home in the league this season and gave Palace immediate momentum.

For much of the opening exchanges, Palace looked organized and confident. However, the defining incident arrived in the 57th minute when Matheus Cunha drove forward toward goal.

As he attempted to break clear, Lacroix challenged him, and the forward went down under pressure.

Referee Chris Kavanagh awarded a penalty, concluding that although contact may have begun outside the box, the infringement continued into the penalty area.

The decision was immediately reviewed by VAR, yet after careful examination, the on-field call remained unchanged.

The situation deteriorated further for Palace when Lacroix was issued a straight red card for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. Reduced to ten men, the visitors suddenly faced an uphill battle.

United captain Bruno Fernandes handled the pressure with composure, converting the penalty to level the score. Energized by the equalizer and numerical advantage, United pushed forward in search of a winner.

Fernandes soon delivered again, this time providing a precise free-kick that Benjamin Sesko attacked with authority, heading home to complete the turnaround.

The victory lifted United into third place in the table, strengthening their push near the top of the standings, while Palace slipped further down. Nonetheless, the officiating call remained the central talking point.

Many Palace fans argued that the initial contact occurred outside the area and questioned both the penalty award and the dismissal.

Conversely, others maintained that because the foul persisted inside the box, the referee’s interpretation aligned with the laws of the game.

Later clarification from the Premier League Match Centre stated that the decision was upheld on the grounds that the offence continued into the penalty area and prevented a clear scoring opportunity.

Even with that explanation, debate has intensified, adding this incident to the season’s most discussed VAR moments.

Controversy aside, United emerged with three vital points, thanks largely to Fernandes’ leadership and Sesko’s decisive finishing on a dramatic night at Old Trafford.
