Ibrahima Konaté found himself under heavy criticism from several Liverpool journalists following a worrying defensive moment during the club’s Champions League clash with Galatasaray in Istanbul.
The Liverpool centre-back endured a particularly difficult sequence in the second half, and that single passage of play was enough to draw sharp reactions from reporters including Ian Doyle and Lewis Steele.
The incident came during a tense period of the match when Liverpool were already struggling to keep control. Konaté’s mistake almost handed the Turkish side a second goal and could easily have left the Reds facing a much steeper deficit. The French defender attempted to play a routine pass back to goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who had been outstanding in the first half with a series of crucial saves that kept Liverpool in the contest. However, Konaté’s pass was poorly executed and lacked the necessary power and accuracy.
Instead of safely reaching the goalkeeper, the ball was underhit and allowed Noa Lang to close in and take possession. Lang drove forward before delivering a clever cut-back into the central area of the penalty box, where danger was looming for the visitors.
Konaté attempted to recover from his initial error by stepping in to deal with the situation, but his intervention only made matters worse. Rather than clearing the ball decisively, his touch left it loose inside the area. That mistake proved costly because the loose ball fell directly to Victor Osimhen, who reacted quickly and fired the ball past Mamardashvili into the net.
For a moment it appeared Liverpool had conceded a damaging second goal. However, fortune was on their side.
After a brief check, the goal was ruled out for offside, meaning the scoreline remained unchanged and Liverpool avoided what could have been a major setback. Considering the defensive uncertainty on display, many observers felt it was remarkable that the English side were not trailing by more at that stage of the match.
Although Konaté could not be directly blamed for the opening goal scored earlier by Mario Lemina, his overall performance at the back did little to reassure supporters watching the tense encounter in Turkey. Unfortunately for the defender, the celebrations were short-lived. The referee ruled that the ball had struck Konaté’s upper arm before crossing the line, meaning the goal was disallowed for handball.
