Manchester United reportedly had the chance to sign Aurélien Tchouaméni from Monaco in 2021… but turned it down

Recent reports have suggested that Manchester United were previously given a significant opportunity to sign highly rated midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni during his time at AS Monaco in 2021, but the potential transfer ultimately did not progress after the club chose not to pursue the deal further.

According to the accounts, Manchester United were monitoring the French midfielder closely at the time and were aware of his growing reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young defensive midfielders.

However, the club is believed to have prioritised other transfer objectives instead, leaving no dedicated financial plan in place to complete a move for a player in his position.

Instead, United were reportedly more focused on their long-standing interest in Declan Rice. Despite their admiration for the English international, that pursuit was also complicated, with West Ham unwilling to negotiate easily and the overall deal proving difficult to advance.

As a result, United did not make a decisive push for Tchouaméni, and the opportunity eventually slipped away.

The situation took a very different turn a year later when the French midfielder completed a high-profile transfer to Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants secured his signature in a deal worth approximately £85.3 million, viewing him as a key long-term addition to strengthen and refresh their midfield department.

Since arriving at the Santiago Bernabéu, Tchouaméni has been integrated into Madrid’s evolving squad structure as part of their broader rebuild strategy.

Interestingly, the same transfer window also brought significant movement involving Manchester United. With

Tchouaméni already heading to Spain, United instead turned their attention elsewhere and secured the signing of Casemiro from Real Madrid.

The Brazilian midfielder arrived at Old Trafford as an experienced and proven solution in midfield, immediately taking on a leadership role within the squad.

This sequence of events highlights how interconnected and unpredictable the transfer market can be. A single decision or shift in priority can dramatically alter the direction of multiple clubs, influencing not only immediate squad composition but also long-term planning and success.

For Manchester United, the failure to pursue Tchouaméni more aggressively is often viewed in hindsight as a missed opportunity, particularly given his rapid rise and importance at one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

However, the arrival of Casemiro provided a different kind of solution, offering experience and stability at a crucial moment in the team’s development.

Ultimately, the situation serves as a clear example of how transfer decisions can shape the future trajectories of elite clubs.

While United chose one direction, Real Madrid capitalised on the opportunity, securing a player they viewed as central to their long-term midfield strategy.

It remains a reminder that timing, planning, and decisive action in the transfer market can define success or regret for years to come.
