Manchester United Step Up Efforts to Sign Mateus Fernandes as Midfield Rebuild Continues
Manchester United are reportedly increasing their efforts to secure the signing of West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with the talented Portuguese youngster now regarded as one of the club’s top priorities during the current summer transfer window.
As the Red Devils continue reshaping their squad ahead of the new campaign, strengthening the midfield has become one of the main objectives for manager Ruben Amorim and the club’s recruitment team.
After reviewing several possible options over recent months, Fernandes has now emerged as the player Manchester United are most eager to bring to Old Trafford.
United’s focus shifted toward the 21-year-old after interest in Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson began to fade.
Forest’s high valuation of Anderson, combined with growing expectations that the player could move to Manchester City, encouraged United to redirect their attention toward alternative targets. Among those considered, Fernandes has steadily moved to the top of the shortlist.
The club has already completed important work in the transfer market by agreeing a deal worth around £39 million for Atalanta midfielder Ederson.
However, Ederson is viewed primarily as a versatile addition who can strengthen several areas of the squad rather than the long-term replacement for Casemiro, who is expected to leave the club and continue his career with Inter Miami.
Although Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni remains one of Amorim’s dream signings, Manchester United understand that completing a deal for the French international would be extremely complicated due to financial considerations and Real Madrid’s position.
For that reason, the club has continued exploring several other midfield options.
Throughout the summer, Manchester United have closely monitored a number of highly-rated players, including Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali, Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, and Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton.
Each of those players has attracted admiration from United’s scouting department, but Fernandes has gradually become the preferred choice following his impressive performances for West Ham.
Last season, the Portuguese midfielder established himself as one of the Hammers’ most reliable performers. He featured regularly in the Premier League, making 36 appearances while contributing important goals and assists throughout the campaign.
Beyond his attacking contributions, Fernandes also impressed with his defensive work, consistently recovering possession, making crucial tackles, and displaying the stamina required to compete at the highest level.
His ability to influence matches at both ends of the pitch has convinced Manchester United that he possesses the qualities needed to become a key figure in their future midfield.
Initially, United hoped West Ham’s financial situation might encourage the London club to negotiate at a more reasonable price.
However, recent changes within the club’s ownership structure have improved West Ham’s financial stability, allowing them to adopt a stronger negotiating position.
Current reports suggest West Ham value Fernandes at approximately £80 million, although some sources claim they may ultimately demand closer to £100 million before agreeing to sell one of their most valuable assets.
Southampton also stand to benefit financially from any future transfer after negotiating a 15 percent sell-on clause when Fernandes left the club previously.
Despite considering the asking price extremely high for a player still developing in the Premier League, Manchester United remain interested in exploring every possible avenue to complete the transfer.
Competition, however, is expected to be fierce.
Fernandes has attracted admiration from several major European clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Paris Saint-Germain, and Real Madrid, making him one of the most sought-after midfielders available this summer.
Among those clubs, Tottenham Hotspur are believed to represent Manchester United’s strongest competition. Reports suggest Spurs have already begun discussions with the player’s representatives, led by renowned agent Jorge Mendes, and initial conversations have reportedly been positive.
Even so, optimism remains high at Old Trafford.
Manchester United believe personal terms are unlikely to present significant difficulties should both clubs eventually reach an agreement.
There is also confidence that Fernandes himself is attracted by the opportunity to wear the famous red shirt.
One factor believed to work in United’s favour is the prospect of playing alongside fellow Portuguese international Bruno Fernandes.
The relationship between the two players, combined with the chance to become part of Amorim’s rebuilding project, could influence the midfielder’s final decision.
Having already missed out on several transfer targets earlier in the window, Manchester United are determined not to let another opportunity slip away.
