The 2026 FIFA World Cup has produced countless unforgettable moments, with many of football’s biggest stars rising to the occasion and leading their countries through difficult matches.

Throughout the tournament, supporters have witnessed breathtaking goals, dramatic comebacks, and outstanding individual displays from some of the world’s finest players.

Even nations that entered the competition as outsiders, including Cape Verde, captured the imagination of fans with spirited performances and memorable stories.

However, not every player has lived up to expectations. While the race for the Golden Boot has dominated headlines, there has also been growing discussion about those who have failed to perform on football’s biggest stage.

Several experienced stars and established internationals have struggled to reproduce their club form, leaving their nations disappointed when it mattered most.

In goal, Uruguay veteran Fernando Muslera has unfortunately become one of the tournament’s biggest talking points for the wrong reasons.

During Uruguay’s elimination against Spain, a costly mistake played a significant role in his nation’s exit from the competition.

Reports even suggested that the experienced goalkeeper requested to be substituted at half-time, although by then the damage had already been done.

His difficult performance will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the defining moments of Uruguay’s disappointing campaign.

Germany captain Joshua Kimmich also finds himself among the tournament’s underperformers. While he cannot shoulder all the responsibility for Germany’s elimination, the experienced midfielder was unable to inspire his side during another frustrating international tournament.

Despite his unquestionable quality and leadership, Germany once again failed to meet expectations on the world stage.

Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly endured an equally disappointing tournament. As captain, much was expected from the experienced centre-back, but Senegal suffered one of the competition’s most dramatic collapses after surrendering a two-goal advantage late in a knockout match.

Koulibaly also struggled individually during several fixtures, failing to produce the commanding defensive displays supporters have become accustomed to seeing throughout his career.

Former Manchester United defender Victor Lindelöf also endured a difficult World Cup with Sweden. Although he had shown encouraging signs at club level before the tournament, he was unable to replicate that form for his national team.

Defensive mistakes and inconsistent performances contributed to Sweden’s struggles throughout the competition.

Qatar full-back Homam Al-Amin also experienced a tournament to forget. His statistical contribution was minimal before receiving a red card against Canada, making it one of the most disappointing individual displays of the World Cup.

In midfield, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes entered the tournament carrying enormous expectations after enjoying an outstanding club season.

Many anticipated he would become Portugal’s creative leader, but things never truly clicked for him.

Despite his work rate and commitment, Fernandes managed only a single assist and was unable to produce the decisive moments Portugal desperately needed during their campaign.

Scotland’s Scott McTominay also struggled to build upon the momentum he carried into the tournament. Having played an important role in helping Scotland qualify for the World Cup, hopes were high that he could continue his impressive form.

Unfortunately, his influence during the finals proved limited, and he failed to deliver the attacking impact many supporters expected.

Uruguay captain Federico Valverde similarly found it difficult to inspire his national team. Widely regarded as one of the world’s best midfielders, he was expected to drive Uruguay forward.

Instead, the team often appeared slow and lacked creativity, with Valverde unable to influence games in his usual commanding fashion.

Veteran forward Cristiano Ronaldo also experienced a disappointing tournament. At 41 years of age, expectations were naturally lower than during his prime years, but many still hoped his experience and leadership would prove decisive.

Instead, he struggled to make a significant impact and appeared unable to influence matches consistently as Portugal’s campaign came to an early end.

On the touchline, Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti also came under criticism following his side’s elimination.

Despite his remarkable managerial career and wealth of experience, several tactical decisions and substitutions during Brazil’s defeat to Norway were heavily questioned.

Many observers felt the legendary coach was unable to find answers as Brazil’s hopes of winning another World Cup came to an unexpected conclusion.

While these individuals remain among football’s biggest names, the World Cup once again demonstrated how even the most accomplished players and coaches can endure difficult tournaments.

Football’s biggest stage demands excellence, and this summer several established stars unfortunately fell short of the incredibly high expectations placed upon them.
