ROY KEANE DELIVERS FURIOUS VERDICT AFTER UNITED’S 4-2 DEFEAT

    ABBy ABAugust 16, 2026No Comments4 Mins Read

Manchester United’s final pre-season fixture has ended in major frustration after the Red Devils suffered a disappointing 4-2 defeat to AC Milan in Wrocław, Poland, leaving Michael Carrick with plenty of questions to answer before the Premier League campaign begins.

The match was supposed to provide United with one final opportunity to fine-tune their tactics, improve squad cohesion and build confidence before competitive football returned.

Instead, the encounter reportedly exposed serious defensive concerns, particularly during the second half when AC Milan scored four times to completely overturn the game.

The defeat has understandably generated concern among Manchester United supporters, while former captain Roy Keane has reportedly been highly critical of what he witnessed.

United initially looked comfortable and appeared to have made the perfect start. Harry Maguire opened the scoring just two minutes into the match after rising to meet a Bruno Fernandes corner and directing his header into the net.

However, Milan gradually grew into the contest and eventually found their equaliser. Samuel Chukwueze reportedly scored in the 37th minute, ensuring the two teams went into the break level.

United then regained their advantage shortly after half-time.

Patrick Dorgu capitalised on an error from the Milan defence to put Manchester United back in front, seemingly giving Carrick’s team an opportunity to control the remainder of the contest.

Instead, the match quickly turned into a nightmare.

Milan responded strongly and found another equaliser in the 57th minute. Alphadjo Cissè reportedly finished at the far post after receiving a delivery from Chukwueze, with United once again exposed defensively.

The problems became even more serious just 11 minutes later.

Chukwueze was reportedly given too much freedom on the right side, allowing him to create another dangerous situation. Gonçalo Ramos took advantage of the opportunity, heading Milan into the lead and completing the turnaround.

United’s defensive struggles continued, and Milan soon found a fourth.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek reportedly found space on the left before producing a curling finish in the 71st minute, putting the Italian side 4-2 ahead and completing a remarkable second-half comeback.

The collapse has reportedly become the biggest talking point surrounding United following the final whistle.

Roy Keane, who has frequently been outspoken about Manchester United’s standards, is said to have delivered particularly strong criticism of one of the club’s senior players.

The former captain reportedly questioned whether United can continue depending on the player during the upcoming season.

Keane is also alleged to have suggested that the player’s introduction during the game contributed to United losing control and allowed Milan to exploit weaknesses within the defensive structure.

The reported comments have sparked debate among supporters, with some fans now questioning whether Carrick has enough reliable defensive options available to him.

The timing could hardly be worse.

Manchester United have very little time to address their weaknesses before competitive football begins. Conceding four second-half goals in the final pre-season test will inevitably raise concerns about the team’s organisation, concentration and ability to protect leads.

Carrick will now have to analyse the performance carefully and determine whether the problems can be solved internally or whether the club needs to return to the transfer market.

There were positives for United. The team showed enough attacking quality to take the lead on two separate occasions, demonstrating that there is potential going forward.

The major issue was their inability to maintain control once Milan increased the pressure.

For a manager preparing for a demanding season involving Premier League and European football, that weakness cannot be ignored.

The defeat should not automatically be viewed as a disaster because it was only a friendly, but it has provided Carrick with a serious warning ahead of the new campaign.

The question now is whether Manchester United can quickly correct the defensive issues or whether the problems exposed against Milan will continue into competitive matches.

With expectations surrounding the club extremely high, Carrick will know that there will be little patience if United repeatedly surrender advantages once the real season begins.

For now, the 4-2 defeat has left the Red Devils with plenty of work to do before the opening Premier League fixture.
