Michael Carrick has addressed Manchester United’s disappointing defeat to Hull City

    ABBy ABAugust 23, 2026No Comments3 Mins Read

Michael Carrick has called for calm and concentration at Manchester United following the club’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Hull City in their opening Premier League fixture.

The result was a frustrating way for the Red Devils to begin the new campaign, but the manager has insisted that the setback should not cause panic or change the club’s wider plans.

United entered the match with expectations of starting the season strongly, but Hull City produced a determined performance and managed to secure all three points.

The defeat has inevitably generated criticism and raised questions about United’s readiness, particularly after the team struggled to create enough attacking opportunities and conceded twice through situations that Carrick believes should have been handled better.

Following the match, attention quickly turned towards Manchester United’s continued interest in Carlos Baleba.

The Brighton midfielder has been heavily linked with a potential move to Old Trafford, with supporters eager for an update regarding the club’s pursuit of the highly-rated midfielder.

However, when Carrick was asked about Baleba, the United manager refused to allow the transfer speculation to dominate the conversation.

Carrick reportedly made it clear that his immediate priority was analysing the defeat and preparing his players for the next challenge.

Rather than becoming distracted by questions surrounding potential transfers, the manager focused on the performance against Hull and the improvements he believes Manchester United must make.

The defeat was particularly disappointing because of the circumstances surrounding the goals United conceded.

Carrick was reportedly frustrated that both goals came from set-piece situations, highlighting an area of the team’s performance that will require immediate attention.

Defensive organisation and concentration during dead-ball situations are essential at the highest level, and the United manager knows that repeated mistakes could prove extremely costly throughout the season.

Despite the disappointing result, Carrick has attempted to maintain perspective. Losing the opening game is obviously difficult for any manager, especially at a club with Manchester United’s expectations, but he does not believe one defeat should determine the direction of the entire campaign.

The manager’s message is understood to be that United must learn from what happened rather than allowing the result to affect their confidence.

There is still a long season ahead, and the squad will have plenty of opportunities to correct its mistakes and collect important points.

Carrick is now expected to demand a stronger response from his players in the next fixture. The team will need to show greater intensity, improve its defensive concentration and become more effective in possession if United are to quickly recover from the disappointing beginning.

The result has also increased the pressure surrounding Manchester United’s transfer plans. Supporters may now expect the club to accelerate its efforts to strengthen areas of weakness, particularly in midfield and defence.

The continued speculation surrounding Baleba is therefore likely to remain a major talking point as the transfer window approaches its final stages.

For Carrick, however, the priority is clear: United must respond on the pitch. The Hull City defeat cannot be changed, but the team has an opportunity to show that it was a temporary setback rather than the beginning of a larger problem.

Manchester United now have to put the disappointment behind them, identify the mistakes that cost them the match and prepare properly for the next challenge.

The opening defeat has created concern, but Carrick remains focused on ensuring his players react positively and demonstrate that they are capable of turning the situation around.
