MICHAEL CARRICK GIVEN MAJOR WARNING AFTER HULL CITY EXPOSE UNITED’S BIGGEST WEAKNESSES

    ABBy ABAugust 23, 2026No Comments3 Mins Read

Manchester United’s 2-0 opening-day defeat to newly promoted Hull City was undoubtedly a disappointing way to begin the Premier League campaign, but the result itself may not tell the entire story.

For Michael Carrick and his coaching staff, the bigger concern will be the number of tactical, structural and individual issues that became visible throughout the match.

While one defeat should never be allowed to define an entire season, United’s performance highlighted several weaknesses that could become much more costly if they are not corrected quickly.

One of the biggest concerns was the lack of understanding within the midfield. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos had not started alongside each other during pre-season, yet both were immediately given the responsibility of controlling the centre of the pitch in a competitive Premier League fixture. Unsurprisingly, their partnership appeared short of chemistry.

United struggled to establish the kind of midfield dominance expected from a team with their ambitions. There were moments when players appeared unsure of their positioning, while the passing combinations lacked the fluidity needed to consistently move Hull’s defensive structure.

The problem was not limited to midfield.

Bruno Fernandes was also operating within a combination that had not previously been tested competitively, with Tielemans and Santos alongside him.

The Portuguese captain attempted to influence the game, but several of his movements failed to produce the desired response from his teammates. Promising situations therefore frequently ended before United could create genuine danger.

Another major issue was United’s difficulty dealing with Hull’s defensive setup. The Tigers used a back five and maintained a compact shape, making it extremely difficult for Carrick’s players to find spaces in dangerous areas.

This was particularly concerning because similar problems had already appeared during pre-season encounters against Leeds United and AC Milan. United may have enjoyed significant possession, but controlling the ball meant very little when they could not turn that dominance into clear goalscoring opportunities.

There were also concerns surrounding the physical condition of several players. Bruno Fernandes, Tielemans, Matheus Cunha and Noussair Mazraoui appeared to lack full match sharpness after limited involvement during pre-season. That lack of rhythm may have affected the intensity and quality of United’s performance.

Carrick’s tactical decision involving Bryan Mbeumo also attracted attention. Moving Mbeumo away from the central striker position meant United lacked a consistent focal point inside the penalty area.

Without someone regularly occupying dangerous central positions, attacks became easier for Hull to defend.

Ultimately, Hull deserve enormous credit. The newly promoted side executed their plan with discipline, patience and determination. They remained compact, waited for opportunities and punished United when they made mistakes.

For Carrick, the defeat should therefore be treated as a serious warning rather than simply an unfortunate opening-day result.

United will face far stronger opponents throughout the campaign, and the weaknesses exposed against Hull could be punished even more severely.

The challenge now is for Carrick to identify the problems, improve the chemistry between his players and find a tactical system that allows United to turn possession into genuine attacking threat.

The season is only beginning, but the Hull defeat has already given Manchester United plenty to think about.
