Crystal Palace 1-3 Liverpool: Florian Wirtz on target as Eagles hit rock-bottom in Premier League

Liverpool Hand Crystal Palace Another Defeat as Florian Wirtz Scores First Premier League Goal of the Season

Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage is facing increasing pressure after his side suffered another disappointing Premier League defeat, losing 3-1 to Liverpool at Selhurst Park. Florian Wirtz finally opened his league scoring account for the season, while Alexis Mac Allister and Alexander Isak also found the net to secure an important victory for Andoni Iraola’s team.

Despite the final scoreline, Palace showed encouraging signs during the opening half and created several opportunities that could have changed the direction of the match. They had a goal ruled out for offside, struck the crossbar and forced Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker into a series of impressive saves.

However, their inability to turn those opportunities into goals proved costly. More importantly, Palace once again struggled to defend a set-piece situation, allowing Liverpool to take the lead through Mac Allister just before half-time.

That defensive weakness will undoubtedly frustrate Sage, particularly because his players had been competitive for much of the first period. Liverpool took advantage of their opportunity and gradually established control, with Wirtz and Isak adding further goals after the break.

Eddie Nketiah eventually scored a late penalty for Palace, but it was not enough to prevent another defeat.

Palace Start Brightly but Liverpool Threaten Early

Liverpool wasted little time making their intentions clear. In the opening minute, Mac Allister tested Dean Henderson with an effort that forced the Palace goalkeeper into a low save.

The hosts responded by pushing forward and briefly putting Liverpool under pressure. Tyrick Mitchell delivered a dangerous ball into the six-yard area, but Jorgen Strand Larsen could not position himself properly to direct it towards Alisson’s goal.

The visitors soon returned to the attacking third, with Mac Allister attempting to score from a free-kick. Dominik Szoboszlai also tested Henderson, who produced a diving save to deal with the effort.

Palace then came close to taking the lead in the 18th minute. Yeremy Pino collected a cross from Mitchell before producing a curling effort that appeared destined for the net. However, Alisson was fortunate to see the ball strike the crossbar and rebound into play.

Pino had another opportunity shortly afterwards when he rose to meet a corner, but his header went directly towards Alisson, allowing the Brazilian to make a relatively comfortable save.

Strand Larsen also threatened after being denied a shooting opportunity by the combined defensive efforts of Virgil van Dijk and Milos Kerkez.

Mac Allister Punishes Palace’s Set-Piece Weakness

Palace thought they had finally broken the deadlock in the 33rd minute when Strand Larsen found the back of the net. Unfortunately for the home supporters, the celebrations were interrupted by the assistant referee’s offside flag.

A subsequent VAR review confirmed that the goal could not stand, leaving the hosts frustrated after another promising attacking moment.

Palace continued to search for an opening, with Daichi Kamada producing a sharp effort that required another quick intervention from Alisson.

However, their positive spell ended when Liverpool found the breakthrough in the 40th minute.

Szoboszlai delivered a free-kick into the penalty area, where Mac Allister was left unmarked and managed to head the ball beyond Henderson. It was a relatively straightforward finish for the Liverpool midfielder, but the ease with which he found space inside the box will have been particularly disappointing for Sage.

Liverpool carried their advantage into the interval, with Alisson also making important saves to deny Quinten Timber and Adam Wharton before the break.

Wirtz Ends His Goal Drought as Liverpool Take Control

Liverpool returned for the second half determined to extend their advantage, and they did exactly that just nine minutes after the restart.

Bradley Barcola delivered a low cross into the Crystal Palace penalty area. The ball travelled past several defenders before reaching Wirtz, who calmly guided it into the bottom-left corner.

The goal was particularly significant for the German international because it represented his first Premier League strike of the season. Interestingly, his previous league goal had also come against Crystal Palace in April, making the Eagles familiar opponents for his return to the scoresheet.

With Liverpool now leading by two goals, Palace needed to respond quickly. They continued pushing forward and nearly found a way back into the contest with less than 15 minutes remaining.

Dario Osorio, who had come on for Timber, squared the ball towards Pino, leaving the Spanish attacker with a one-on-one opportunity against Alisson. However, the Liverpool goalkeeper reacted brilliantly, rushing off his line at exactly the right moment to smother the attempt.

Alisson remained busy as he subsequently denied Jefferson Lerma, while Nketiah sent another effort over the crossbar.

Isak Adds a Third Before Nketiah Scores Late Consolation

Palace’s hopes of recovering were dealt another blow when Alexander Isak scored Liverpool’s third goal in the 89th minute.

Henderson had initially produced an impressive save to prevent the Swedish striker from scoring less than five minutes earlier. However, he could not repeat the intervention when Isak got another opportunity from close range. His effort took a deflection and looped over the goalkeeper before crossing the goal line.

Liverpool appeared set to finish the match with a clean sheet, but Palace were awarded a penalty during stoppage time following a collision involving Osorio and Kerkez.

Nketiah stepped forward and confidently dispatched the spot-kick into the top corner, giving the home supporters something to celebrate despite the disappointing result.

The late goal proved little more than a consolation, as Liverpool held on to secure a convincing 3-1 victory.

For Iraola, the result represents another important step forward as Liverpool continue their pursuit of consistency. Wirtz’s breakthrough goal and Isak’s contribution will also provide encouragement ahead of their upcoming fixtures.

For Sage, however, the situation remains concerning. Palace showed enough attacking quality to trouble Liverpool, but missed opportunities and familiar defensive mistakes ultimately cost them. Unless those problems are addressed quickly, the pressure on the Crystal Palace manager is likely to continue growing.
