Frank Lampard Set to agree a deal to become manager of European giants

Lyon officially announced on Monday a mutual termination of contract with former boss Laurent Blanc.

This decision came as Lyon found themselves struggling at the bottom of the Ligue 1 table after four matches in the current season, notably following a 4-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

The distressing loss to PSG prompted Lyon’s ultras to passionately address the playing squad during a session at the Groupama Stadium, urging them to uphold the honor of the club’s illustrious history and not disrespect the team’s emblem.

Reports emerged last week suggesting that Graham Potter, former Chelsea head coach, had been offered the opportunity to replace Blanc. He declined the offer following a discussion with Lyon owner John Textor.

Now, sources reveal that Lyon is considering another ex-Chelsea boss, Frank Lampard, for the managerial position.

Textor, who is also a co-owner of Crystal Palace, holds great respect for the former midfielder. Lampard has been previously linked with the managerial role at Crystal Palace.

Since the end of the 2022/23 season, Lampard has been without a managerial role after his caretaker stint at Chelsea concluded, succeeded by Mauricio Pochettino.

He briefly managed Everton in the last season but was dismissed in January while the team was battling relegation.

Lampard’s managerial journey began with Derby County in the 2018/19 season, reaching the Championship play-off final, but failing to secure promotion.

Despite Lyon’s interest in Lampard, they are also considering Gennaro Gattuso, a former Milan star and Valencia’s ex-manager, for the role.

Gattuso’s managerial career has seen its ups and downs, including a near appointment as Tottenham Hotspur’s head coach in 2021, which was subsequently changed due to fan protest. He also had a brief tenure with Fiorentina, ending before his contract officially started.

In light of these developments, Lyon is carefully evaluating potential candidates to take over the managerial role and lead the team to better performances in the ongoing season.
