A Premier League powerhouse has been deprived of its Premier League titles after being found culpable of 115 charges by the Football Association (FA).

The recent confirmation of Everton’s 10-point deduction in the Premier League has sparked numerous inquiries about potential punishments for Manchester City, adding a layer of uncertainty to the ongoing Financial Fair Play (FFP) investigation.

Everton faced the harshest penalty in Premier League history, dropping from 14th to 19th in the standings due to breaching financial rules. The club, currently considering an appeal, incurred losses exceeding the permitted £105 million over three years.

All eyes are now on Manchester City, facing allegations of violating hundreds of financial laws dating back to the 2009/10 season. The Premier League confirmed the referral of these alleged breaches to an independent Commission, outlining the breaches in five separate points. The proceedings will be confidential, heard in private, and the Commission’s final award will be published on the Premier League website.

Despite the severity of Everton’s punishment, there’s uncertainty surrounding City’s potential penalties. Speculation includes the possibility of a 30-point deduction or even relegation to the Championship, as suggested by journalist Martyn Ziegler. However, the prospect of retroactively stripping Premier League titles appears remote.

While City’s seven Premier League titles since 2009/10 are unlikely to be revoked, the threat of significant point deductions or relegation looms large. The situation is described as “unprecedented,” and the outcomes of the investigations will shape the club’s future in the league.

The complexity of the case raises questions about the fairness and proportionality of potential punishments. The FFP investigation has introduced an element of unpredictability into the Premier League landscape, leaving both City and Chelsea, also under investigation, in a precarious position.

City’s dominance in recent years, winning the Premier League seven times, could face scrutiny, but the prevailing sentiment suggests a focus on forward-looking penalties rather than retrospective actions. The unprecedented nature of the situation emphasizes the challenges in determining appropriate consequences for financial rule violations.

As the Premier League awaits the Commission’s decision, the football community remains on edge, anticipating the impact on the title race, league dynamics, and the broader discussion around financial regulations in the sport.
