Terry Venables, the former England manager, has passed away at the age of 80 after a prolonged illness, according to confirmation from his family. Venables, who held the England manager position from 1994 to 1996, guiding the team to the Euro 1996 semifinals, succumbed to Germany on penalties.

His family announced the news, expressing deep sadness over the loss of a beloved husband and father, urging privacy during this challenging period.

The League Managers Association (LMA) extended condolences, stating that Yvette and the entire Terry family are in their thoughts and prayers.

Born in Dagenham in 1943, Venables enjoyed a substantial playing career with over 200 appearances for Chelsea and playing more than 100 games for Tottenham and QPR.

Venturing into management in 1976 at Crystal Palace and subsequently QPR, Venables later took charge at Barcelona in 1984. His tenure saw notable success, clinching a La Liga title in his first season, with Gary Lineker praising him as “the most innovative coach I have ever played under.”

Returning to England after departing Tottenham in 1987, Venables steered the team to an FA Cup triumph in 1991. His managerial journey then led him to the helm of the England national team, achieving victories against Scotland and the Netherlands in Euro 96 but facing a heart-wrenching penalty shootout defeat to Germany in the semifinals.

Post his England stint, Venables managed Australia for a year before returning to the UK for managerial roles at Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough, and Leeds United.

Terry Venables’ legacy extends beyond borders, encompassing success in both domestic and international arenas.

His influential coaching style left an indelible mark on the teams he led, and his contributions to football will be remembered with fondness. As the football community mourns his loss, tributes pour in, highlighting the impact of his remarkable career on the sport.
